Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper-alloy finger ring of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1700 - 1900. The ring is formed from a thin copper-alloy band of uneven width. It is rectangular in section. The ring would have been circular but it has been bent out of shape during its time in the ground. The outer surface of the ring is decorated with linear grooves, pairs of which cover the width of the band. Both surfaces are greatly obscured by corrosion, resulting in a patchy dark green patina. The ring is 21.08mm in length, 2.64mm in width and 0.94mm in thickness. It weighs 0.52g. This finger ring is of …

A perforated stone roof tile or thatch weight of Roman to Post-Medieval date, c.AD 43-1900. The stone is a pure chalk, cream in colour, with a rough surface. The fragment is irregular in shape and appears to have been broken in half: one half of a circular perforation with straight drilled sides is apparent. This narrows from one side to the other, suggestion that it has been bored through from one side. It is 94.69mm in length, 60.19mm in width and 27.02mm in thickness. It weighs 144g. This object was found in an area of Early-Medieval activity. As such, an Early-Medi…

Almost complete Roman copper-alloy Trumpet brooch dating to the period c. 75 - 175 AD. The head of the brooch is a flared 'trumpet' in form, curving back and down from the bow. The curved edge is accentuated on the front by a wide groove that runs along it. The top edge of the head is notched, suggesting that a chain loop has been broken off. Behind the head is a tubular hinge with a rectangular gap at the centre for the pin. Most of the pin has broken off and is missing; however a spur remains where it was attached to the hinge bar still within the tubular casing. The bow of the broo…

Copper-alloy early medieval zoomorphic D-shaped single-looped buckle dating to c. 1000 - 1100 AD. The buckle has a bevelled inner edge and a rounded outer edge which bulges slightly at the apex. The corners of the buckle are two stylized zoomorphic beasts which 'bite' the strap bar; these are formed from an enlarged section that is rectangular in plan and triangular in section, with incised ring and dot 'eyes' on each rectangular face. Small pointed spurs protrude from the bottom, forming little 'beaks'. These spu…
