Complete medieval copper-alloy pointed-oval seal matrix dating to c. 1300 AD. The seal matrix consists of a flat, pointed-oval plate with an integrally cast D-shaped lug protruding from the back at a right-angle. Centrally on the front face is the indented forward-facing figure of a female wearing a crown and holding a child and a lily. The figure probably represents Mary, and the child the infant Jesus. The edges of the se…

Copper-alloy disc brooch, missing only pin and probably of Roman or early medieval date (c. 43 - 550 AD). The brooch is flat and circular in shape. The front appears to have been decorated, possibly with a curvilinear pattern; unfortunately, the surface has been corroded and worn and the detail has been lost. Rough patches on the front surface suggest that the brooch may have been enamelled, something common for brooches of this type in the Roman period. At the back of the brooch there is a double D-shaped pin lug with the remains of an iron pin still between the two lugs. The use of …

Early medieval copper-alloy pin head (c. 500 - 900 AD). The pin has a globular head and a tapering, cylindrical shaft, which has broken off at the end. Green and red corrosion of the copper-alloy has obscured surface detail, but shallow circular knobs on the surface of the globular pin head suggest that the pin may have been decorated. It is this that suggests an early medieval date over a Roman one. The length of the pin is 25.12mm, the diameter of the pin head is 25.12mm and the pin weighs 2.94g. The pin is very similar to YORYM-8E158E, which was found in close proximity to it. …

Copper-alloy Roman Aucissa brooch, missing only its pin (c. 43 - 80 AD). The brooch has the highly arched D-shaped profile typical of its class. At the head is a hinge mechanism formed from an integral copper-alloy sheet wrapped around to form a cylinder. A groove in the middle leaves space for the pin, now missing. One side of the hinge tube has been straightened, probably when the pin was lost. Below the hinge is a rectangular section, after which the bow narrows and then widens, tapering slightly towards the foot. The foot is flat and lozenge-shaped; it points forward from the bow …

Roman copper-alloy Headstud brooch, with broken head loop and missing pin (c. 75 - 175 AD). The brooch has a hinged mechanism that forms two tubular wings, one at either side of the bow and at right-angles to it. There is a groove at the back for the pin, which is missing. From the top of the head, two spurs, one long and one short, are the remains of the head loop. The bow curves out and down from the head, tapering slightly to a forward-protruding flat rounded foot knob; it is broadly rectangular in section, with a downpointing triangular depression at the head and a triangular catc…

Copper-alloy Roman Thealby Mine brooch, missing its pin and head loop (c. 75 - 175 AD). The head of the brooch takes the form of two tubular wings extending at a right-angle to the bow on each side; this is the cylinder of the hinge mechanism. A vertical groove at the back of the head shows evidence of the corroded remains of the pin, also visible at each end of the hinge cylinder as a dark brown in contrast to the light green patina of the rest of the brooch. There is a wide decorative vertical groove down the front face of each wing. At the very top of the head is a transverse ridge…

Copper-alloy fragment from a medieval composite strap-end (c. 1300 - 1500 AD). The fragment is of a flat circular frame with a decorative collared knop which flares and then terminates in a smaller knop. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper-alloy hook or mount of probable medieval date (c. 1000 - 1500 AD). The hook consists of a sub-triangular plate and integral long, back-curving sharp spur. The plate tapers from the spur end, bulging slightly in the middle. It bends very slightly in the middle so that it points down. The spur also tapers to its point; it is rectangular in section. There is no evidence of any rivets or any other method of attachment, although it is possible that a further hook was soldered onto the narrow end of the plate. The spur is perhaps too long for the object to be interpreted as a mount, …

Copper-alloy fragment of an unidentified object, probably dating from the Roman to the medieval period (c. 43 - 1500 AD). The fragment is flat and largely lozenge-shaped, with two triangular 'fins' projecting from the widest point of the lozenge, one on either side. At one end of the lozenge there is a flat, rounded knob; at the other end is a slightly larger knob, the surface of which is angled so that is largely five-sided. The rough, light brown surface at the end of this knob suggests that it is at this point that the fragment broke from a larger object. The fragment is slightly c…
