Incomplete silver-plated copper alloy counterfeit (contemporary copy) of a Charles I shilling. The coin is copying those dating 1639-1640AD but was probably made during the English Civil War between 1642 and 1646AD.
The obverse has a worn crowned bust of the king facing left; behind the head are the Roman numerals XII. The legend reads CAR[OLVS] D G MAG BR[I FRA ET HI] REX. The reverse has a square shield on long cross fourchée. The legend reads CH[RISTO]AVSPICE [REGNO].
The coin is damaged around the edges and the copper alloy core can clearly be seen.
