Object type: TOY
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Flintshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy toy miniature canon of late Post-Medieval date (17th-19th century). These models were produced as complete working models of their larger counterparts. This toy cannon comprises a circular barrel that tapers from bulbous knop (cascabel button) at one end, to the muzzle at the other. Two trunnions, which are round in section, project from a collar midway along the barrel. These would have enabled the piece to be elevated and mounted onto a wooden wheeled carriage such as that depicted in Bailey (1993), p.37, No. 12. The total width of the canon across the tru…

A lead or tin-alloy object that appears to be a whistle and of probable post-Medieval date (c. 1600-c. 1800). The main body of the object is bottle shaped with a cylindrical neck and a short rounded body with an acorn shaped knop at the base. The upper cylindrical 'neck' is hollow inside and has a length of 17.9mm and an outer diameter of 14.9mm. On the inside of the object there is a solid 'floor' between the 'neck' and the 'flask' which gives the appearance that the 'flask' is solid. However, due to slight damage at the base, it is possible to confirm that it is hollow. At the rear,…

A lead alloy spindle whorl of medieval to early post-medieval date (c. 1300-1500). The object is circular in plan with a central circular perforation, the internal diameter of which is 7mm. Only one face is decorated with moulded lines some of which appear to be curved resembling possible letters. If not entirely fictional and imitative, it is possible that the runes may relate to an individual's name, or perhaps are a religious inscription. However it may be that th…
