A fragment from a Post-Medieval copper alloy spur, probably dating to c. 1600-1850. The surviving fragment consists of a section of one arm, this is subrectangular in plan, tapering slaightly towards one end and with a squat, lozengiform cross section. It is undecorated, terminating in old breaks at either end. Dimensions: length 55.1mm; width 15.2mm; thickness 5.5mm; weight 20.36g. Ellis (1988) notes that spurs became increasingly fashionable in the 17th century, and whilst this example is too fragmentary to be paralleled it is likely that it dates to this period.

The spur takes the form of a seven-pointed mullet in plan, with a central perforation and with an incised groove radiating from this to the insterstice of each point. Dimensions: Diameter 42.1mm; thickness 2.4mm; weight 11.41g. Similar rowels are illustrated by Read (1995: 127, nos. 805-806), which he suggests date to the eaely Post-Medieval period. cf. similar examples on this database, e.g. HAMP-A89734

A Post-Medieval copper alloy rowel spur, probably dating to c. AD 1700-1850. The spur is fragmentary, with only one abraded arm and a circular-sectioned neck surviving. The rowel box, rowel and second arm all lost to old breaks. The surviving arm is plano-convex in cross section. The spur appears undecorated, but has surviving traces of a white metal coating. Dimensions: length 71.5mm; width c. 73mm; thickness 11.7mm; weight 23.60g. Ellis (2002) notes that rowel spurs largely replaced prick spurs in Western Europe from the 14th century onwards, however most examples are much lat…

A Post-Medieval copper alloy rowel spur, probably dating to c. AD 1450-1550. The spur is almost complete, missing only the tip of one of the rowel box arms. The arms of the spur are plano-convex in cross section, with each terminating in an upwards curving, broadly tri-lobed terminal, with three perforations and delineated by a transverse collar. The neck expands from the reverse of the arms, initially with a thick, sub-oval cross sectioned collar, before bifurcating into the rowell box, the surviving arm of which is upcurved with a rounded and slightly expanded terminal. This is perf…

An incomplete Post-Medieval Rowell spur, probably dating to c. AD 1600-1800. The surviving fragment of the spur consists of an arm,. half of the other, the neck and part of the rowel box, with the terminals of the arms and rowel box, with the rowel itself missing. The arms are D-shaped in cross section, with a sub-oval boss reinforcing the junction between the arms and the rear, from which the neck expands. This is lozenge-shaoed in cross section, bifurcating into two arms to form the box but with one arm missing. Both arms appear incomplete, however the longer of the two has an off…

An incomplete Post-Medieval Rowell spur, probably dating to c. AD 1600-1700. The surviving fragment of the spur consists of the rear haf of each arm, the neck and part of the rowel box, with the terminals of the arms and rowel box, as well as the rowell itself all missing. The arms are D-shaped in cross section, 2.9mm thick and broadening from 6.2mm wide to 9.5mm, where the two arms converge in a point on the upper edge. From the point at which the arms converge the neck expands, this has a transverse, pointed oval cross section, 7.3mm wide by 5.1mm thick, and has a shallow U-shaped l…

A Medieval to Post-Medieval copper alloy rowell spur, probably dating to c. AD 1300-1700. The spur is a five-pointed star or mullet shape in plan, with broad triangular arms. In cross section it is broadly flat, with the less abraded arms tapering towards the edges. At the centre of the star is a circular perforation, 4.3mm in diameter. Dimensions: length 41.1mm; width 40.6mm; thickness 3.2mm; weight 8.55g. Ward-Perkins (1940: 109) illustrates simple 6-pointed rowell spurs dating to the early 14th century, with the spurs continuing in use for a considerable amount of time (see f…
