A Late Iron Age to Early Roman Iron early hinged brooch, probably dating to AD 25-70. The surviving fragment comprises of the upper bow, head and partial pin, the lower bow being lost to a corroded break.
The head of the brooch survives to a width of 17.8mm, with cylindrical wings retaining an iron axis bar in situ. A hinged iron pin projects from the reverse of the head, sub-rectangular in cross section and truncated by a fresh break. A Post-Medieval iron 'key-hole' type horseshoe, probably dating to c. AD 1600-1900. The object is U-shaped in plan and is slighly bevelled in cross section, its arms curve inwards slightly and end in rectangular terminals, with no calkins, creating a key-hole shaped aperture. There are no clear nail holes and the shoe may never have been used.
Dimensions: Length 121.3mm; width 125.1mm; thickness 19.9mm; The object weighs in excess of 200g.
