A Medieval silver penny of John (AD 1199-1216) dating to c. AD 1205-1207. Voided short cross class Vb2, but with damaged right eye punch. Minted in London by Ilger. North (1991: 221, no. 970ii). The coin is incomplete, with the outer edge down to the inner circle missing between 5 and 8 o'clock.
Although Mass (2001: 39) lists the only defining feature between Vb2 and Vb3 as being damaged eye punches, the manner in which the punch on this example is damaged differs to the distinctive damage seen in class Vb3, and it seems more likely that this is an individual fault rather than a ge…

The coin was wrapped in a small fragment of cloth, now beige but with a circular area of green staining from contact with the copper alloy coin. The cloth is plain weave, and approximately 100 threads per inch. It weighs 0.72g.
