A highly abraded Early Medieval to Medieval copper alloy Stirrup-strap mount, of Williams' (1997) Class A, type 8, dating to c. AD 1000-1100. The surviving mount comprises of a sub-triangular plate, the zoomorphic terminal seen on comparable mounts truncated above the ears. Although now highly abraded, comparison to other examples would suggest that a pair of bifurcating tendrils project from the reverse of the head, terminating in lobes and forming the edge of the plate and with three cast sub-circular openwork elements dividing the tendrils and their lobed terminals. The lower porti…

A Medieval silver penny of John (AD 1199-1216) dating to c. AD 1205-1207. Voided short cross class Vb2, but with damaged right eye punch. Minted in London by Ilger. North (1991: 221, no. 970ii). The coin is incomplete, with the outer edge down to the inner circle missing between 5 and 8 o'clock. Although Mass (2001: 39) lists the only defining feature between Vb2 and Vb3 as being damaged eye punches, the manner in which the punch on this example is damaged differs to the distinctive damage seen in class Vb3, and it seems more likely that this is an individual fault rather than a ge…

It exhibits an unusual laminar break, with a distinct outer layer with a dark brown patina coming away from an inner surface with a bright green patina. The lack of any holes on this inner surface would suggest that this relates to the manner in which it was cast, rather than a second thimble placed inside the other.
