Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: County Durham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A collection of 4 chunks of worked flint of possible Mesolithic origin. The flints all have multiple flake removal scars and have no evidence of retouch. Chunk 1 is heavily re-corticated, indicative of being in the ground a relatively long time after being worked. Chunk 4 is a pale semi-translucent flint, almost quartz-like. There is a shallow bulb of percussion on the ventral surface and a small lump of cortex on the distal end of the dorsal surface. It is possible that this is a core rejuvenation flake. Chunk 1: Weight 2.5g, Length 22.90mm, Width 12.30mm, Thickness 10.07…

A tertiary flake of dark grey flint that resembles a thumbnail scraper of possible Mesolithic origin. This piece has no evidence of retouch but may be an abandoned attempt to produce a scraper. The ventral face is concave and has scars where flakes have been removed from the bulb of percussion. The dorsal face is convex and the striking platform is very jagged, there are some very narrow flake removal scars here which may indicate some attempt to dress the edge of the striking platform. The flint has a light/pale covering patina. Weight 3.0g, Length 21.18mm, Width 17.76mm, Thick…

The fifth and smallest chunk is a grey/brown semi-translucent tertiary flint pointed at both ends. Each piece has a number of flake removal scars but there are no clear striking platforms. The largest chunk has some crushing along one edge that may indicate its use as a hammer stone. Chunk 1: Weight: 7.2g, Length 23.38mm, Width 20.51mm, Thickness 14.15mm. piece of flint debitage of possible Mesolithic origin. This flint has been heavily re-corticated following its original production suggesting a long period in the ground post production. It has the form of an unfinished microburin but lacks any evidence of retouch. The distal end has been broken relatively recently to expose dark grey flint and this has removed any evidence there might have been of retouch. The ventral surface is deeply convex and the dorsal surface has four narrow flake removal scars. The proximal end has been roughly snapped, possibly at the time of production…

A flint blade of possible Mesolithic date. This a flake of pale brown semi translucent flint which has a heavy white patination suggesting a long period in the ground after production. The dorsal face has two long arrises where sub parallel flakes were removed prior to the final separation from the original core. The ventral face is concave with a very shallow bulb of percussion (soft hammer). There is a clear striking platform at the proximal end. The distal end has two recent chips (no patination) where the point has been broken off, relatively recently. There is a small (1…

A possible core rejuvenation flake of possible Mesolithic origin. It is struck from a brown flint with pale cortex around the edges covering about 20% of the total surface. There are the remains of a large bulb of percussion on the ventral face and a single central arris separating two broad parallel flake removal scars on the dorsal face. Later flake removals at 90 degrees to the earlier ones have removed the earlier striking platform and some of the bulb of percussion. The proximal edge has then been modified with long scaled abrupt retouch, possibly to produce a working e…

A sub-triangular grey flint blade or scraper of uncertain date but found in a Mesolithic landscape. There is a shallow bulb of percussion on the ventral surface just below a small striking plaform that has scars indicating some prior platform dressing. There is a single arris on the dorsal face and semi abrupt, long, scaled retouch along two thirds of the edges producing two fine points.

A small piece of grey flint debitage of uncertain date but associated with a Mesolithic landscape. The object is sub -square in cross section and is roughly pointed at the distal end. Irregular short flaking on one edge and around the point may be retouch although natural wear cannot be ruled out. If This is regarded as worn abrupt retouch this object might be considered to be the broken end of a rod shaped microlith. It is 15.77mm long, 8.15mm wide, 8.10mm thick and weighs 1.4g.

(c. 2500 - 1500 BC) The object is composed of a light grey flint that is sub-triangular in plan and cross section. There is a pointed tip at the distal end and at the proximal end a striking platform where some short flakes have been removed to dress the platform. There are multi directional removal scars across the dorsal surface and a raised central arris runs along the lower 2/3 of its length.
