Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete early early-medieval copper-alloy radiate-headed brooch dating to the 6th century. The base of the foot and pin are missing; the spring survives as a corroded area of iron. The catchplate has been damaged and repaired in antiquity. The object has a semi-circular headplate with semi-cylindrical projections at 12, 3 and 9 o'clock (when viewing with the head uppermost). These are decorated on the curving front with transverse grooves and resultant ridges. The body of the headplate is decorated with punched ring-and-dot motifs arranged in three rows: one at the top, five at…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete post-medieval (1500-1700) copper alloy buckle plate, consisting of the upper decorated half only. Originally the plate would have consisted of one copper-alloy sheet, cut and folded transversely at the centre. This example is broken in half at the point where it would have folded around the buckle frame leaving two undecorated tabs extending from the decorated plate (for a complete example see WMID-389B1E). The plate has incurved long edges and a tri-lobed short end opposite to the tabs. The plate is decorated on the front with foliate decoration in the form of a centra…

Object type: POWDER MEASURE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete early post-medieval (1600-1700) lead powder flask cap or measure, missing one of its two basal loops - the extant loop is damaged and squashed against the side. The object measures 22.9x15.7mm wide at the open end and 19.3x12.9 mm at the base. It stands 15.0 mm tall and is slightly squashed which has distorted the base. The wall thickness ranges from 2.3 mm (including internal concretions) at the base to 1.4 mm towards the upper rim. There is no obvious casting seam. The object weighs 12.12 g. The loops would have fastened to the bandolier (belt) with a chord. The fl…

Object type: AMPULLA
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete medieval (1350 - 1500) lead pilgrim's ampulla, missing its neck and broken just above the rounded bottom half. The break appears to be old and the ampulla is rather squashed but rounded base remains intact. It is decorated on one face with longitudinal grooves radiating outwards from the broken edge, in the scallop shell pattern described by Brian Spencer (SSWM Medieval Catalogue Part 2) as type II. The opposite face has a sub-circular central section which is decorated with a raised cross-hatched pattern with the letter 'S' at the centre. Traces of a shallow rectangle h…

Object type: RAPIER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: City of Southampton
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An almost complete cast copper alloy Middle Bronze Age rapier. The butt is incomplete and damaged which makes the original shape difficult to determine. Two C-shaped incomplete rivet holes or notches lie in the upper part of the butt, which is where the handle would have been attached. The notches are spaced approximately 24.82 mm apart. Slight shadow (shallowing of the metal) of the handle is visible just under the rivet holes extending centrally to the top of the break. This widest point (49.52 mm) is at the shoulders. The blade extends c. 290 mm from the base of the butt and is ap…
