An incomplete copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 5, flat wing ends type, Western Group), cf.Mackreth 2011, 5.a1.Plate 49, dating to AD 43-120. The wings are C-shaped in cross section, being hollow to the reverse, and span 31.1mm. A pierced lug is at either end and holds the axis bar in place; these measure 7.7mm in diameter. An additional double-pierced lug at the centre of the reverse holds the axis bar in it lower peircing. An incomplete copper alloy Roman Colchester derivative, hinged brooch dating to AD 50 - 150. The upper bow, wings and pin of the brooch are all that survives. The transverse break across the bow is old damage. The tubular wings span 30.7mm and hold inside an axis bar around which the head of the pin swings. They measure 4.2mm in diameter and are undecorated. The entire pin survives but has a slight bend halfway along the shank.
