Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Medieval lead seal matrix dating from AD 1200-1400. The die is circular and there is a borken attachment loop at the edge. The matrix is slightly convex due to damage and warping.
At the centre of the engraved design is a crescent moon next to an eight pointed star or sun. The inscription around the image reads S' ROGERI I: ADAM, roughly translating to Seal of Roger, son of Adam.
There is a seal recorded on the database which bears a similar insigina and inscription: YORYM-D59507. It is likely that this is a personal seal of an individual who has adopted this particular motif.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead circular uniface weight with raised design showing a six petaled flower or star. Post-Medieval in date.
Lead tokens and weights had a wide variety of uses and were made locally; therefore they are difficult to date precisely and are generally dated to c. 1250-1800. Tokens with initials are generally thought to date to the post-Medieval period, c. 1550-1800. If this object was used as a weight, its suggested date range could be extended more generally to include Roman to Modern periods of activity.
Dimensions: weight: 97g, diameter: 39.8mm, thickness: 9.4mm

Complete lead token of probable post Medieval date (c. 1500 - 1800).
The token is flat and circular, with one face featuring a cross hatch design and a central thick, and slightly raised undecorated band. The opposite face appears plain though the raised band is also present.
Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as use as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A post medieval cloth seal dating from c. 1500 to 1800.
The seal is circular in shape and is made of lead. There is a small rectangular tag at the top. It is likelty that this seal would originally have been formed from two lead disks and connected by the rectagular tag at the top.
There is some evidence of red colouring on one side of the seal, which could be evidence of proximity to iron substances or could be decorative. The tag is slightly floded and damaged andfeatures a small hole in the middle of the fold.
