Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

A large cast lead cloth seal, circular in plan, embossed on one face with a double-headed eagle surmounted by a crown. The seal appears to be a single disc without obvious signs of an attachment for a second disc. The reverse of the disc is unmarked and with no apparent cloth impression. The disc has a slightly raised rim around the edge. The double-headed eagle is the symbol of the Hanseatic Clothworkers Guild, but its use on seals does not necessarily imply that this is a continental seal, according to Egan (1995) p.116. The Hanseatic organisation had outstations in Ipswich and Lond…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy crotal or rumbler bell, dating from the mid-18th to the early 19th century. Crotal bells came to be described as rumblers from the 17th century. The bell is broken vertically, with the weld mark between the top half and bottom half still visible. The lower half of the bell has a sunburst design radiating from a border of two half cir…

Silver Venetian soldino of one of the Doges of Venice, Leonardo Loredan, issued from 1501-1521 in Venice, Type 9. Soldinos were known as the galyhalpens (galley-halfpence) as they were brought into the country by the annual Venetian trading fleets. The soldino was about the size of English halfpennies and was popular because of a contemporary lack of small change; soldini in fact occur as English finds more often than proper halfpennies of the period.
