Incomplete cast copper alloy spur dating from the Post-medieval period. The rowel is missing, but the rowel box has traces of the iron pin in the attachment holes where the rowel would have fitted. The box has expanded and rounded terminals which curve upwards and narrow towards the short neck which is oval in section. A cast copper alloy stud with a lozenge-shaped head that is plano-convex in profile, dating from the late Medieval to the early Post-medieval period. The head is decorated on the upper face with a saltire cross formed of pellets radiating from the centre within a square of pellets. The square sits diagonally within a beaded border that forms the edge of the stud. On the reverse is a pointed shaft of square cross-section, the tip of which has broken off, now 4.5 mm long and 3 mm wide at its base. This mount has a parallel in an example illustrated in Read (2001, pp.27 & 32, fig.17, no.…

Cast copper alloy mount with two integral hooked lugs on the reverse at the top and bottom of the mount, curving away from the centre. The item is in the shape of a stylised blossoming flower. Petals branch out from a central lozenge shaped knop which may represent the pistil of the flower with a triangular receptacle at the base of the petals. The petals are marked with grooves and the receptacle is delineated with diagonal grooves separating it from the petals above. The mount is patinated with the pinky brown of the abraded copper surface showing through and it appears to have been…

Silver cut half of a short cross penny of John (1199-1216) or Henry III (1216-1272), dating from Class 5c (1207-1210) to Class 7a (1217-1222). The penny has been cut slightly off-centre, with the result that the only letters visible are L.ON. on the reverse. The most likely moneyer is therefore Abel who minted Class 5c-7a coins in London from c.1207-1222.

Cut farthing of a silver long cross penny of Henry III (1207-1272), Long Cross coinage (1247-1272), probably from Classes I - IV, as the inscription on the obverse appears to begin at 12 o'clock. From Class V onwards the inscription begins at 10 o'clock. The legends are very worn, but the letters hEN are visible on the obverse and ONE, with the O ligatured with the N, on the reverse. This arrangement appears with the mints of Exeter, Oxford and York. The Exeter mint was active during the production of Classes IIa-IIIc, and Oxford and York were active during the production of Classes I…

A cast copper alloy oval setting containing an opaque blue glass intaglio, with a trace of a red border around the edge of intaglio and a bevelled edge to the copper alloy frame. The red material is probably setters wax, made of shellac and turpentine or resin, which was used to hold the glass intaglio within the frame. There is a trace of white substance on the edges of the frame of the intaglio, perhaps lead solder. The intaglio depicts a bust of a head facing right. The image appears to be a male head wearing a wig with layers of curls, that is tied at the back of the head, and wit…

Sherd of pottery of a red fabric, slightly curved with moulded decoration on the incurved side and a smooth exterior surface. Both surfaces are coated with a bright terracotta slip, but Roman Samian would have had a clear slip and this appears painted to make them more orange in colour, suggesting that this is a modern imitation. The sherd is also untypical of genuine Samian ware in that the moulded decoration is on the inside of the vessel. The moulded decoration shows a cherub in a short flowing tunic holding a flower in one hand with a bowl of flowers in the background. The style o…

Silver Venetian soldino of one of the Doges of Venice, Leonardo Loredan, issued from 1501-1521 in Venice, Type 9. Soldinos were known as the galyhalpens (galley-halfpence) as they were brought into the country by the annual Venetian trading fleets. The soldino was about the size of English halfpennies and was popular because of a contemporary lack of small change; soldini in fact occur as English finds more often than proper halfpennies of the period.

A gilded copper alloy book clasp of Medieval date and of Howsam type A.9.2. The hollow attachment end (termed by Ward Perkins a 'box chape') is square, hollow and open at one end to accommodate the strap which would have been fixed to one cover of the book. It has two iron rivets still in place to secure the strap, which would have been 2 mm thick and 26 mm wide. The hollow end is made up of two parts; the edges of the upper face are bent down on three sides and invisibly attached to the backplate, which is flat and which continues the full length of the clasp.
