Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast copper-alloy mount or fitting dating to the medieval period, c. 1150-1400. The mount is bar-shaped in plan, each terminal being scallop-shaped with a central circular aperture at its midpoint (in which the original copper-alloy rivets are preserved). Each terminal is divided from the central bar by a thickened transverse moulding. Preserved in good condition with an even greenish patina despite being bent at a roughly 45 degree angle, it measures c. 33.1mm in length (when the bend is accounted for), 10.22mm wide at each terminal and 1.83mm thick at its midpoint. It wei…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy bar mount dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1350. It is rectangular in plan, the upper surface displaying a secondary projecting rectangular boss that gives a 'tiered' effect. At each end and the centre of the mount is a single circular aperture (that at the middle being the largest) which would originally have accommodated copper-alloy rivets, though now only one survives in-situ. The reverse face is plain and completely featureless, Preserved in good condition with an even greenish patina, it measures 23.69mm in length, 8.11mm wide by 1.76mm thic…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy gilt mount, fitting or hasp dating to the Early Medieval period, c. 600-700 AD. The mount is rectangular in plan, one end truncated in old damage. At the complete end of the mount, it terminates in two opposed birds heads, whose beaks curl around and converge at their apex to form a small circular aperture. Behind these, the main body of the mount consists a rectangular panel bordering an intricate pattern of curving interlace designs in either Style 2 or of Style 2 derived form. Towards the back of the mount (as it survives) are two offset broken circu…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy bar mount dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1400. The mount takes the form of a central domed boss with a single band of hatched decoration, from the upper and lower edges of which project two smaller domed bosses with small circular apertures at their midpoint that denote the original location of separate copper-alloy rivets which would have attached it to a strap or belt. Only one of these now remains in situ, the other missing. Preserved in good condition with an even greenish patina, it measures 17.92mm in length, 10.21mm wide at its widest poi…

A complete cast copper-alloy bar mount dating to the Medieval period, c. 1150-1400. The upper face of the mount's main body is decorated with incised cross-hatched decoration. Preserved in good condition with an even greenish grey patina, it measures 19.15mm in length, 9.32mm wide by 2.72mm thick at the midpoint of the body, and weighs 1.66g. An incomplete cast copper-alloy gilt mount of probable Anglo-Saxon attribution, probably dating to the first half of the 7th century (c. AD 600-650). The mount is anthropomorphic, consisting a facing male mask wearing what appears to be a horned helmet (the 'horns' mostly missing in an old break) that originally would have joined at their apex. The eyes and sides of the face have been well rendered, but all features below the upper nose are illegible due to corrosion. The front face of the object retains most of its gilding, though its rear face is plain and undecorated with the excep…

A complete cast copper-alloy gilt mount of probable Anglo-Saxon derivation dating to the Early Medieval period (c. AD 500-600). It is square in plan and section, its upper face demonstrating a rectangular recessed inner panel decorated with chip-carved Salin Style 1 decoration consisting a curled animal with a thin tail and a pellet (?) eye. In the recesses of this design, gilding is almost perfectly preserved. At each corner of the mount's upper edge is a circular aperture, while at the midpoint of the lower edge is a third example-all of the latter presumably intended to allow the m…

A complete cast copper-alloy repousse sheet-metal mount in the form of a dog or wolf, dating c. 1100-1300. The animal is depicted as passant left in the attitude of leaping, the tail demonstrating a circular knop at its end and curled into an 'S' shape. The fore and hind legs are stubby, the body demonstrating irregularly spaced incised grooves that infer the presence of ribs, fur and contouring between the legs and body itself. The head of the animal has also been decorated with engraving, rendering the mouth, eyes and 'scaled' motifs that give the impression of hair. Directly above …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy fragment originating from a probable box or casket mount of Medieval date, c. 1100-1400. Only around a third of the original mount survives- consisting one terminal end and the lower mid-section of the piece, with the rest of the object missing in old damage. Originally, the complete object would have been bar-shaped (sub-rectangular) in plan and is plano-convex in section, with a rounded upper surface and flattened underside. Each lobe has a small circular aperture at its midpoint, which in both cases here retains the remains of the copper-alloy rivets which originally would have attached it to a leather strap or belt. An incomplete cast copper-alloy, gold leaf and garnet Early Anglo-Saxon zoomorphic shield mount of Dickinson and Harke's group C (figural appliques usually of gilt bronze in the shape of fish or other animals), dating c. 500-600 AD. In plan the mount would probably have taken the form of a fish or aquatic creature: the 'head' end is broken away, but the rest of the object is preserved intact. The main body of the object is oval in plan, with a raised elongated oval section at its midpoint (thus creating a 'tiered' efect) containing three recessed cells that appear to retain the residu…

An incomplete repousse copper-alloy mount of probable Roman date, c. 43-410 AD. It is broadly rectangular in plan, demonstrating a flat outer border with two circular apertures-one at the top, and one at the bottom of the object. These presumably would originally have contained rivets, serving to attach the object to something. Within this, a rectangular inner border of repeating circular pelleted motifs frames the central decorative element, which takes the form of a human mask- the eyes, nose and mouth realistically rendered. An incomplete pair of lead-alloy spiral star shaped mounts, their edges partly broken away in old damage. The fronts of the mounts demonstrate a spiraloid star-like pattern, the surviving arms terminating in tight scrolls. These are possibly late Medieval to early Post-Medieval (c. 1400-1550) decorative architectural ceiling mounts, comparable with a number recorded on the PAS database, e.g PUBLIC-CF1EB2 and WAW-D18D4E.
