Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint side scraper on a broken tertiary flake, scalar semi-abrupt directly applied retouch forming a rounded convex working edge. Most of the platform shattered away in old damage. Length down percussion axis: 29.05mm, 39.63mm maximum width, 9.23mm thick at its midpoint. Weight: 14.51g. The crude nature of this piece suggests Middle-Late Bronze Age manufacture, c. 1500-750 BC.

Object type: ADZE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment originating from a knapped flint tranchet adze of probable Mesolithic date, c. 6000-4000 BC. The fragment consists the butt end of the adze, broken around a quarter of the way down the original object in an old, patinated oblique hinge fracture. The fragment is broadly semi-circular in plan, with a flattened underside and prominent dorsal arrise on its upper face-giving it an overall triangular section. Almost the entirety of the original support surface has been removed by secondary working, which takes the form of highly invasive bifacial removals-probably detached via me…

Object type: ADZE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint adze of probable Mesolithic to early Neolithic date, c. 8000-4000 BC. The adze is of small size, being broadly triangular in plan with a very prominent dorsal arrise running down one face. By contrast the opposing face is much flatter, though displays a large patch of cortex close to the original cutting edge-the butt of the tool also being cortical. Lateral long removals of retouch down the edges of the piece probably reflect a combination of hard and soft hammer work, an attempt at a tranchet removal (unsuccessful) seemingly visible on one face. Manufactured on a pri…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint core of probable Bronze Age date, c. 2500-1500 BC. The core is sub-rectangular in plan, demonstrating removals from both faces and sides with little apparent care for flake direction and forethought of detachment. Heavily worked down (probably representing the reason for its discard), it is now patinated a yellowy grey colour with some iron staining visible on its surfaces. Preserved in relatively fresh condition, the core measures 71.43mm in length down its longest axis, c. 56.14mm wide at its widest point and 30.8mm thick at its midpoint. It weighs 159.6g.

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete knapped flint arrowhead dating to the Early Neolithic, c. 4000-3000 BC. This is a leaf-shaped example, being broadly lenticular in plan with a widened butt and tapering sides that converge to form a sharp point. Manufactured on a tertiary flake of dark brownish black flint, the arrowhead demonstrates invasive retouch (pressure flaking) on both faces-though this has not removed all of the original flaked surface. Preserved in fresh condition, it measures 31.4mm in length, 14.83mm wide at its widest point, 2.66mm thick at its midpoint and weighs 1.74g.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped flint arrowhead probably dating to the early Neolithic period, c. 4000-3000 BC. This appears to be the base of a leaf-shaped arrowhead, demonstrating a rounded butt and tapering sides that extend to slightly above the midpoint of the original full object, its upper midsection and tip missing in a neat truncation. Knapped from a tertiary flake of fine-grained translucent blackish grey flint, the original flake surfaces on each side have been completely removed by the means of invasive covering retouch (pressure flaking). Preserved in fresh condition it survives to…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A tertiary flint flake of probable later Mesolithic or Neolithic date, c. 6000-2500 BC. Struck from a core of fine grained bluey-grey flint, this piece is blade-like in appearance and likely represents a correction piece originating from a blade core. Triangular in plan, it demonstrates slightly tapering sides that converge to a rounded point, the butt being pointed and the platform of lenticular form. Two dorsal arrises are visible, while on the ventral face the bulb of percussion is visible. The bulb itself is somewhat diffused and flattened, suggesting that this piece may have been…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete knapped flint lithic implement (possibly a crude knife) dating to the late Neolithic or Bronze Age, c. 3000-1150 BC. The tool appears to have been manufactured on a broadly triangular core rejuvenation flake, the dorsal face highly 'humped' and demonstrating numerous intersecting blade/flake negatives. The ventral face has been worked inversely, with large invasive removals (perhaps soft hammer) creating a rather crude edge. A notch is visible in the opposing edge, though whether this is a knapped feature or simply edge damage remains unclear. Preserved in somewhat patinate…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped and polished flint axehead dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-2500 BC. The butt and midsection are missing in an oblique patinated break, with only the lower body and cutting edge preserved extant. Deep negative flaking on both sides of the axe close to this break suggests this may have resulted from use. Demonstrating a rectangular section and slightly expanding flat sides, the axe has been manufactured on a piece of greyish flint which has now in places patinated to an off-white mottled with blue. Considerable iron staining on both faces marks the location…
