Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete, flint, neolithic scraper or knife, 4500-2500BC. The object is a tertiary flake with a longitudinal dorsal ridge form by two larger flake scars. The proximal end of the flake has been truncated and worked on both faces to remove the bulb of percussion and also to create a chamferred edge. The long edges of the object have been retouched with short, scaled, abrupt retouch to create a tool edge. The flint is a, transluscent, dark brown in colour.

A neolithic, flint, thumb scraper, 4500-2500BC. The object is a tertiary flake, with no remaining cortex, it probably represents the distal end of a long blade that has been snapped and used to form the scraper. Along one edge there is short, abrupt, scaled retouch. The other edge has an abrupt edge and the proximal end has a sharp right angled termination from the break. It is possible that this is the broken end of a sickle blade.

A complete, neolithic, flint, scraper, 4500-2500 BC. The object is triangular in shape with cortex remaining on the dorsal face approx 70% coverage. There are some flake scars on this face from the shaping process. The ventral face is a single large bulb of percussion with a single striking platform. The retouch along the tool edge is short, scaled and abrupt. It is predomnantly on the dorsal face with a few retouch removals on the ventral face.

County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint, Late Neolithic - Early Bronze Age, tanged arrowhead, 2350-1700BC. The object comprises a pointed oval blade that has been pressure flaked to shape. There are long, scaled, intrusive removals across the surface of the object to shape the piece. The cutting edges are then retouched by short, scaled removals. The piece has an assymetrical lozenge shaped cross section, with one face more triangular than the other. See also NMS-C33616 a Green, S. (1980) Sutton type A. Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An assemblage of thirty pieces of Mesolithic flint debitage, dating from c.8000-4001 BC and including one possible microlith. The assemblage consists largely of struck blades and some bladelets, presumably for the construction of microliths. There are a couple of debitage flakes, probably from core renewal or production of other tools. The single potential microlith is triangular in both plan and cross section and has scaled intrusive retouch along one face. The flint is milky white in colour. L.19.21mm, W. 6.99mm, T.5.21mm Wg.0.45g.

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete, flint, oblique arrowhead, later neolithic in date, 4500-2000 BC. The arrowhead is made from a milky white flint and is a single barbed arrowhead. The barb is long and cresent shaped, emerging from one side of the triangular head. The tip of the arrow has been lost, probably in antiquity as the break is patinated. Thewhole object is triangular in shape with a single barb. There is long, scaled retouch that is intrusive and has been used to shape the piece giving it a narrow oval cross section. Examples of similar single barb arrowheads can be found in Butler 2005, fig.66…

A complete flint arrowhead, probably Bronze Age in date, 2000-1000 BC. The arrow head is triangular in shape with a short tang along the broad edge. It has been formed from a small strucik flake and worked roughly to shape. The crudeness of the working suggests that the object is not complete and may be a rough out. The point of the arrowhead is quite thick compared to the tang, further suggesting that it is incomplete as no pressure flaking has taken place to thin the piece down.

Object type: POT BOILER
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A collection of eight fire-cracked flint nodules. The flint is unworked and has a cracked and broken surface caused by exposure to intense heat. Fire cracked flints were for a long time attributed to being pot boilers; however, the fact that flint shatters into sharp shards has made this theory more questionable. It is suggested that the flints that have been cracked in this way were used as fire surrounds and have fractured due to repeated heating and cooling in this environment.
