Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy Roman Polden Hill brooch (AD c. 75 - c. 175). The spring mechanism, rear hook, pin and catchplate are missing. Short, hollow, semi-cylindrical wings would have housed the spring mechanism. The ends of these wings are worn but the end caps, which are characteristic of Polden Hill type brooches, are still present. The head of the bow is broadly rectangular in shape and becomes D-shaped in cross-section as the bow leaves the wings. The bow is decorated with a central ridge which runs along the bow to the foot. The ridge is further decorated with transverse groo…

A copper-alloy Roman sestertius of an uncertain emperor, dating to the period AD 41 - 260. Uncertain reverse type depicting Minerva standing right, brandishing a javelin and holding a spear. Probably mint of Rome. The Minerva reverse type is commonly seen on contemporary copies of Roman asses of Claudius, which were mostly struck by the Roman army immediately after the invasion. However, this example appears to be a regular sestertius.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Derbyshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy hollow box chape of mediaeval date (c. 1400 - c. 1500). The chape is a flat box with a blunt trapezoidal plan. One face is decorated with four parallel pairs of incised lines running from the attachment end to the closed end of the chape - it is possible these may form a letter such as M in gothic / black letter script, but iron corrosion obscures part of the face, so it is not possible to be certain. The edge of the attachment end of the front face has some damage but appears to have had three rivet holes (2.5 mm diameter); one still houses the remains of a…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy zoomorphic fitting probably of post-medieval date (c 1500 - 1900). It is in the form of a serpent or mythical beast. The object is S-shaped, with one end having the form of a serpent or bird head with open mouth, well defined eyes and a comb. The mouth looks as if it could have housed a pin or rivet. The other end terminates in an apparently old break. The body tapers to this break, and is thinner than the neck supporting the head at the other end, so it is possible it formed a tail rather than another head. The body has moulded scales, or possibly feathers …

A lead object with a fragment of bone embedded into it. The bone has been identified as a cattle or horse rib by Dr Umberto Albarella, Reader in Zooarchaeology at the University of Sheffield. The lead encases the bone very closely, suggesting it was poured molten over the bone, which was already excarnated (de-fleshed), and apparently broken - the lead has flowed along the fracture at one end of the bone. There are impressions in the lead which may indicate other bone fragments, now missing. The other side of the lead is flat with regular edges and stepped 'lip', as if the lead has a…

Object type: MUSKET BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead musket ball of post medieval, probably 17th century, date. Weight suggests it was more likely used with a carbine than a musket. The ball has a a visible casting seam but the sprue has been neatly trimmed. There is a slight set up mark, a flattened band around the 'waist' of the ball. This is caused by contact with the barrel of the weapon during firing. Diameter 15.3 mm, weight 20.61 g

A cast lead musket ball of post medieval, probably 17th century, date. Weight suggests it was more likely used with a carbine than a musket. The ball has a flattened area - this is probably the 'zone of contact' from being fired as the end ball in a multi-ball load. Firing two or three shots at one time was common during the civil wars. A cast lead ball of post medieval, probably 17th century, date. Probaby from a small musket or carbine. The ball has no obvious sprue scar or casting seam, but the surface is dimpled with shallow dents, probably through post depositional chewing by grazing animals, although it is possible the ball was deliberately chewed prior to firing in an attempt to improve trajectory. Object type: MUSKET BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead musket ball of post medieval, probably 17th century, date. The ball was probably fired as the end ball of a multi ball load. It has a flattened 'zone of contact' and a cylindrical band of set up around the waist of the ball. This band also shows grooves which may be gas cutting. Firing two or three balls in one load was common practise in the civil war, as was the firing of a cylindrical plug behind a round ball, which would produce a similar flattened end and set-up band. Weight is 28.1 g, diameter 16.1 mm.
