A fragment of Roman ceramic tile with Procuratorial stamp dating from AD 80-120. The fragment of tegula or brick has the impression of a stamp that when complete would have read PP BR LON, this is a type Betts 5 stamp. Only the first two letters of the stamp, 'PP' remain. The full stamp would have read P(rocuratores) P(ovinciae) BR(itanniae) LON(dinium). There were 3 examples of die 5 recorded by 1995 which were all recorded on tegula. (Betts 1995:211). A fragment of a Roman ceramic Lowther's Group 5 and Betts Die 60, relief-patterned flue-tile dating from AD 50-410. A similar tile is illustrated in Betts et al (1997:58 Fig.27df No.60). The front is decorated with relief-patterned rolled design in the "Diamond and lattice" group style. Betts writes "Keyed with wooden rollers applied when the clay was still damp, before they were put into the kiln to fire. This was added so the tiles could be more firmly mortared into place."
