An incomplete bone whistle of uncertain date. This whistle has been made from a bone that is shaped to have a sub-rectangular cross-section with chamfered corners at the mouth end, the whistle then thins to form a flat edge. At the mouth end, there is a round hole extending 27.60mm into the bone, creating the mouth piece and there is a D-shaped blow-hole just above. An incomplete Medieval to Post Medieval lead alloy boatswain's (bosun) whistle dating from AD 1400-1550. The gun, keel and part of the buoy remain. The gun is cylindrical with a thicker section at the mouthpiece. The keel is in the form of an open work scroll with two raised pellets and a series of vertical on either side, it has two loops that would have been used to suspend the whistle around the neck using ribbon, silk or string (Redknap 2005:284-5). A complete Post Medieval lead alloy whistle dating AD1600-1800. The whistle consists of a perforated pipe adjoining a spherical sound box which has a circular sound hole and a suspension loop projecting from the end. There is a D-shaped perforation in the upper section of the pipe. There are seams along the sides from the casting and a circumferential rib around the midline.
