A roughly spherical bead made from what appear to be natural chalk fossils, perhaps similar to coral. The bead has a roughly centrally drilled hole. Similar beads from the same site are SUR-D40483. Dimensions: diameter: 17.80mm; height: 15.88mm; weight: 5.61g In view of the proximity of an early medieval burial these may well be of Saxon origin. They were found scattered separately across a field.

A complete Roman "melon" bead made from glass dating from 1st to 2nd centuryAD. The glass is heavily degraded and relains none of original colour. The bead is sub-spherical with raised ribs running along the length of the bead. The central aperture has an internal diameter of 4.22mm. Melon beads form just under half of the total number of beads found in Castleford. Examples of faience are much more common than those of translucent blue glass.
