An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4, flat wing ends type), c.f. Mackreth 2011, 4.e. Plate 47. Dating from the later first to early second century, AD 80-120. The brooch has a sub-circular sectioned bow and raised vertical rib from the head of the brooch to half way down the length of the bow. The head of the bow is curved and perforated to take the spring bar, which is intact. The wings are wide and quite thick, with 'end-caps' to hold the coiled spring in place.
