Complete late Medieval copper alloy purse hanger frame with niello inlay decoration. From the base of a narrow rectangular strap loop a semi-oval loop projects down and forwards curving back on itself towards the base of the strap loop from which it sprung. Just short of the return to the strap loop it bifurcates into two arms. One arm juts downwards in a short tapering projection to restrict the upper part of the semi-oval loop. The other arm continues the frame and turns abruptly to run upwards slightly obliquely to the plane of the loop. Just beyond the terminal end of the…

A complete cast copper alloy post-medieval strap fitting. The fitting comprises two separate elements consisting of a separate roughly finished circular suspension ring and a sub-triangular hooked attachment plate. The plate is in the form of a triangle, the top of which dips slightly in the centre, forming a wide chevron shape. The end of the plate has a transverse groove, from which point it tapers to form a narrow hook that curves rearwards from the plate and retains a separate circular ring with an external diameter of 11mm. Copper alloy Medieval strap loop or slider. Trapezoidal frame with two triangular internal projections at the narrower end of the frame. The front of the wider end has an oval-shaped central bezel. Circa AD1200-1400. Length 16mm, width 18mm, thickness 3mm, weight 1.43g. Similar strap loops are illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (2002); p234, No 1259 is a close parallel. A strap loop would be used on a belt, fitted perpendicular to the strap, to secure the tail of a belt once it has passed through the buckle.

Copper alloy Post-Medieval strap loop or slider. The symmetrical plate is sub-rectangular with two pairs of opposed semi-circular removals from the long sides, thus forming three segments divided by two waists. The sides have a saw-tooth perimeter with two teeth on the end segments and three on the middle. The two ends of the plate are notched with three triangular file cuts. Both ends of the reverse have a perpendicular rectangular prong that would have curved back around the sides of the original strap. For parallels see: DOR-9791B2; SUR-CDCA76; NLM-A66E41; NARC-35B773…

Copper alloy Medieval decorated strap slider or loop. Double looped frame, the smaller of which is rectangular. The second larger loop is D-shaped with a moulded outside edge cast in the shape of a chevron moulded wavy edged leaf sprig, surmounted by a well rendered acorn with a hatched cup. The object is not an asymmetrical buckle as the decoration on the outer loop indicates it was mounted perpendicular to the strap, whereupon it functioned as a strap loop, possibly as part of a matched set with other strap accoutrements. It is similar to examples published from Medieval London (Ega…

Heavily corroded copper alloy Medieval to early Post Medieval strap fitting, probably a suspension hook or strap end such as a clasp. A T-shaped plate has its upright arm bent back through 180 degrees to form a hook. On the reverse of the cross-bar there is a full width copper alloy strip to secure a strap, which was held in place by two sturdy rivets, one at either end. On the back of one rivet there is a large rectangular rove. There are no extant remains of decoration or surface coating evident. Circa AD 1250-1600.

Two copper alloy Post Medieval mounts or strapfittings probably from a light strap. The shapes are in the form of a Tudor rose, but no surface detail is present. The reverses have two pointed prongs to secure the mount to the strap. Both objects were found sufficiently close together to suggest that they probably came from the same strap. The method of fixing is often associated with 17th century harness. Similar examples of strap fittings can be seen in Brian Read's book 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' (pages 34-37). Circa AD1600-1700.

Copper alloy undecorated Medieval strap or tensioner plate. Made from a single rectangular strip of sheet metal, folded widthways in half to loop around the missing frame. The opposite end has a copper alloy medial rivet still extant. At the fold the corners of the plate have been cut back to accommodate a strap bar, but there is no medial pin slot. Both faces have traces of a white metal coating probably tinning, the underlying patina is mid green to grey. Between the two strips of the plate substantial remains of textile fibres survive. The fibres do not appear to be woven and are m…

Incomplete small Post Medieval copper alloy hook and loop strap fitting. Only the hook and a small part (18mm including the hook) of the flat attachment plate survive, together with a separate plain ring (10mm diameter) still looped through the hook. There are more complete and robust examples identified on the PAS database cf. SOM-C4AA0A, SOM-20FDE5 and OXON-34A361. Likewise, Margeson (1993: 39, nos. 257-258) publishes a pair of similar strap fittings both found in contexts dating to c.1600-1650, and suggests that they were mounted to sword belts. This example is altogether smaller a…
