Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy Medieval to early Post Medieval swivel. Swivels such as this were used on straps and have association with animal leashes and as flexible suspension and strap distribution devices. Formed from two circular loops one being half the size of the other. The smaller has a short medial conical body which steps down abruptly to pass through a hole in the flattened bezel of the larger loop and is then mushroomed over to form a rivet. The configuration allows the loops to swivel independantly about the centre axis. A similar example can be seen at WILT-14D7B6. Medieval in date, bu…

Copper alloy Post Medieval toy cannon. Apart from its missing carriage the cannon is complete, with an unusually long barrel (117.5mm) and an in situ ceramic muzzle stopper. Most of the cascable is occupied by an extended breech knob. The distance from the base ring to the first reinforcement ring is short at 10mm and the circular vent hole penetrates through to the bore at the approximate mid-point of this section. The second reinforcement ring is located 77mm along the slightly narrowing barrel from which point the short trumpet-like muzzle section flares. Approximately halfway alon…

Description: Silver early-medieval finger ring. Flat oval bezel which narrows at either end to a thin hoop, the ends of which are twisted together. Only part of one twist is extant, the remainder being missing from an old break. The ring throughout has a rectangular cross-section. The entire bezel is decorated with crude longitudinal rows of punched annulets, creating a depressed ring and corresponding raised dot. It is noted that the position of the dot within the ring is variable and is rarely concentric, perhaps suggesting the use of multiple punches, or the punch held at an angle.…

Small fragment of silver Medieval brooch. The fragment consists of a single raised turret from what is probably an annular brooch. The top of the elongated conical shaped turret is truncated and although damaged appears to form the folds of a collet to contain a stone or gem, no trace of which survives.
