A worn copper-alloy Roman sestertius of Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-180), dating to the period AD 171-173 (Reece period 8). Reverse type depicting Roma seated left on cuirass, holding spear, left elbow resting on a round shield, behind her a shield. Mint of Rome. Cf. RIC III, pp. 295, 298, nos. 1037, 1066 for the type. The coin has a deliberate square hole measuring 2.4mm, probably a nail hole suggesting the coin has been re-used for a different, potentially votive, purpose in antiquity.
