Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper-alloy key and keyring of late early-medieval or early-medieval date (c. 900-1000 AD). The key consists of a very small suspension loop attached to a large flat solid oval bow, an apparently common late early-medieval type from the 10th-11th centuries. The bow is decorated on both sides with an irregular punched ring and dot design. The hollow stem is undecorated save for three closely spaced thin transverse incised lines. The bit is L shaped with three wards. Attatched to the suspension loop is a keyring made from a slip-knot ring more usually associated with sets of…

Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy key dating to the medieval period (probably 12th-14th century). The key is made up of a hollow rolled stem with a massive bit with two large wards. The bow is roughly circular, but its shape is disrupted by two zoomorphic animal-head terminals butting each other. The wards are very solid, with a full-depth cleft between them. The rear ward is rectangular and the front ward has a vertical and horizontal cleft; both have channels on both faces, four on one face and one larger on the other. The bow is decorated with two butting zoomorphic heads one of which is lickin…

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy repair patch or folded 'paperclip' rivet probably from a post-medieval vessel. It has an uneven rectangular outline, folded down from a lozenge-shaped copper sheet which leaving a raised lozenge shape on the folded side. This type of repair was used to fill small splits in copper alloy vessels, secured by the two triangular tabs. Egan (2005, 101) mentions a broad date range for this type of pot mend, dating from the Early Medieval to Post Medieval periods but also suggests that a central period for the use of this type of rivet as dating from about the late 15th to late…

Object type: BEAD
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy ring likely a bead of Iron Age to early-medieval date. (c.800BC-700AD). The ring is not evenly shaped being thicker in one hemisphere than the other. The band is roughly D-shaped in profile although the inner side of the ring appears to have been bevelled to some degree. The surface is dark brown with some very sparse patches of dark green surface patination. Colour is slightly silvery which may suggest a high tin alloy. The ring is in relatively good condition which may suggest it comes from the latter end of the suggested date range. Measurements: 15.8mm diameter, …

The front is slightly convex and the back is slightly concave with the integrally pointed attatchment lugs one near either end. Both lugs are mostly complete and curled downards towards the body of the acorn.. Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy Medieval strap end dating from the second half of the 14th century (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 143). It is made from two sheets of copper alloy, held together by two rivets, one at the attachment end and one at the knop end prior to the knop. The sheets sandwich a third piece of copper-alloy which maybe a third sheet or a spacer to assist with its attachment to its strap. The plates are sub rectangular in plan, tapering slightly towards the closed end which is pointed and terminates in a small knop. A circular notch is cut off centre of the attachment end. There is no dec…

A medieval gilt copper-alloy mount of uncertain date. The mount is a flat rectangle and decorated on one face with a six armed cross resembling the Union flag, although the object likely predates the union flag. The centre of the mount has a circular central hole and the reverse is devoid of decoration. The plate is roughly flat but slightly warped due to post depositonal damage, one long edge has suffered more damaged p…
