An incomplete enamelled Roman copper alloydisc brooch. The brooch has an outer raised border which encloses a field of white enamel, within which there is a circular pattern of alternating enamel round dots, red with yellow centres and teardrops dots which appear to have been turquoise from the one remaining example. Raised central circular border divides enamel from central fitting which contains some Iron corrosion. Roughly 45% of the white enamel and its associated dots is missing from the field on the left side due to post depositional damage. The sides have no decoration. The rev…

A copper-alloy La Tène III type brooch dating from the 1st Century BC- 1st century AD (Hattatt 1987, 22). The brooch consists of a thin bow roughly ovoid in section which turns a near righ end down toward the spring. The spring/pin, which would orignally have been an integral continutation of the bow coiled around on itself has been broken off halfway through the second coil. At the foot end a simple catchplate remains, although it has been flatted out from its orignal shape. The brooch is a deep turquoise in colour as a result of copper-alloy patination. The brooch was produced f…

An incomplete and highly worn gilt copper-alloy Medieval annular brooch dating c. 1200-1400AD. The brooch's frame is circular and relatively flat and very very thin, roughly vasica in shape. One side has the inscription "[J:E:S:]V:S N:A:Z:A:R:E:N:V:[S] R:I:Z [___]" in Lombardic script while the other is blank. it is possible the script was intended to originally read IESUS NAZARENUS REX IUDAEORUM, or Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, or simply IESUS NAZARENUS REX. Both are relatively common inscriptions on this type of brooch (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 164, 1336/1337) however it is …

A late Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-Scandinavian early-medieval copper-alloy disc brooch, of Weetch type 3, dating c. AD 850-1000. Description: The brooch is a disc shape with circumferential decoration made of irregularly shaped rectangles. Unusually, the central boss is devoid of decoration (compared to a more common type with a backwards looking 'beast'), but does have the usual slightly domed/convex shape. The reverse of the brooch is undecorated and has an unusual pin and catch-plate arangement which consists of an integrally cast pin lug that is rectangular in form with a single circ…

A copper-alloy near complete early Anglo-Saxon small-long brooch, with unusual foot. The brooch has a small regular rectangular head, undecorated and with two evenly spaced large rivet holes blocked with iron corrosion. These have been used to attach a separate copper-alloy plate, perhaps a repair for a broken spring. The steeply arched, long narrow bow has a fairly long rectangular-section panel at both top and bottom. The top panel is decorated at its top with a set of three closely spaced incised parallel transverse grooves. There are traces of more transverse grooves partially …

An incomplete tinned/silvered copper-alloy early Early-Medieval brooch of long equal-arm type. The brooch is complete, save for the foot, which has snapped behind the catchplate. At the top of the head, the brooch finishes in a double-lobed terminal, each lobe decorated with an incised ring-and-dot motif; there is another ring-and-dot motif between and below these, then three more widely spaced similar motifs running …
