An incomplete and warped cast copper-alloy Colchester one piece bow brooch of late Iron Age or Early Roman date likely c.15 BC - AD200.
Description: The pair of stubby roughly rectangular wings flanking a central loop for a copper-alloy spring and iron axis bar remains only as a worn stubs. A very narrow near ovoid section bow tapers towards very thin, long and plain foot. The bow is heavily worn, abraded and warped. Description: It is snipped (in a pincer-like or ‘chisel-cut’ way) on either end. The object has a sub-hexagonal cross-section.

Metal composition: Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of a gold bar fragment by the British Museum, indicated a surface composition of approximately 81-83% gold, 14-16% silver, the rest being largely copper. See appended report.
