Object type: MUSKET BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead musket ball of probable post medieval date. There are two flattened areas on the surface, probably where the sprue has been removed, and the mark left by the ramrod. The surface is covered with thick white patination. The weight (35.8g) and size (18.9mm) are consistent with use in a smooth-bore musket of military specification, and it probably dates to the 17th century, though a later date cannot be ruled out.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead weight or possible gaming piece, of probable medieval date. In plan it is rounded at the base, which is of c22mm diameter, with an oval projection at the apex measuring 8.5 by 5.1mm; and in section it is in the form of a shallow cone with a slight lean, 15.5mm high, surmounted by a 3.4mm high central trapezoidal projection. As the surface is heavily patinated and generally worn, the detail is obscured, and it is possible that the projection may originally have been higher and would have been perforated to allow suspension. The object weighs 40.03g.

Prehistoric secondary flake of translucent light grey/brown flint, with some original cortex remaining at two edges and a prominent bulb and ripple marks on the ventral face. Broadly trapezoidal in plan, and has three facets to the dorsal face. Possibly some abrupt retouch (or plough damage) at the distal end. Could be any date from Mesolithic to Bronze age. Maximum length 27.9 mm, width 32.1 mm, thickness 11.5 mm; mass 8.4 g.

Flint scraper of probable Bronze age date. Formed of dark grey flint, broadly pentagonal in profile with rounded ends and domed in section, with abrupt retouch at three edges and cortex remaining over 75% of the dorsal face. Possibly a reworked core. Length 39.9mm, width 34.0mm, thickness 20.5mm, mass 26.4g.

Object type: BULLA
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Possible papal bulla, dating to the medieval period. A 5.2mm thick lead disc measuring c35.5mm in diameter (33.0 - 36.8mm), and weighing 43.4g. Both sides are corroded and covered in thick white patination, and no detail is visible. The dimensions and presence of marks on the circumferential edge where the cord would have been attached lead me to believe this is probably a bulla seal, but it could be something else.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy mount of probable post-medieval date. It is hexagonal in plan, with the stubs of two curved attachment spikes projecting from the rear - these appear to have been cast integrally. The outer face is decorated in relief with a 6 petalled Tudor rose inside a tressured border, accentuated by small knops at the points of the hexagon. The surface is badly corroded and if it was originally gilded, as seems likely, there are no remaining traces. Read, in 'Metal artefacts of antiquity' (2001), ascribes 16th or 17th century dates to similar items.

Silver groat of Mary I of England, dating from 1553-4. Very worn, just enough of the legend remains to identify it. It has minor loss and might be lightly clipped as the diameter, at 22.5mm, is a little less than usual. As North 1960

Lead weight, conical in section and rounded in plan, with a central perforation. It is 16.9mm in height and up to c.12 - 13mm in diameter and weighs 15.7g, but as the perforation is full of soil the true weight will be a little less.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead weight, conical in section and oval in plan, with a central perforation. The item is 25.3mm high and has maximum dimensions of 20.2 - 15.8mm and it weighs 46.9g, but as the perforation is partially filled with soil the true weight will be slightly less. Possibly a gaming piece or net weight, and could be any date from Roman to post-medieval, although several other lead items have been found from this site which can be more firmly dated to the early medieval period.

Unidentified copper alloy object. In plan it is in the form of a very shallow triangle measuring 98 by 45 by 55mm, and is 7.5mm high at the apex, very shallowly rhomboid in profile. There are blow-holes from the casting process on all four faces, and the upper (sloping) face has filemarks. Both pointed ends are worn, but if the item was originally symmetrical (as seems probable), one end may have more wear than the other. The object has a well-developed green patina. It was found in an area where many 4th century Roman coins were present, and where fieldwalking had produced evid…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Derbyshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Viking lead gaming piece. It is in the form of a shallow cone in profile and is round in plan, with a well-developed white patination. It measures up to 27.2mm in diameter and is 10.7mm high in the centre, and it weighs 33.9g. Many similar objects have been found at Torksey (Hadley & Richards, Antiquaries Journal, 2016) and are identified as Viking gaming pieces, and this object has now been inspected by Professors Hadley & Richards and identified as a Viking type.

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Derbyshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small cubic lead weight or die. It measures c8mm square [8.3 x 8.1 x 7.9mm] and weighs 5.17g. It does not appear to have any markings, but it is covered in grey/white patination, and it is possible that there may be some present underneath. This could be of any date from Roman to post-medieval, but it came from a site where other early medieval artefacts have been found, so could possibly be a Viking weight and may be 9th century in date. Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Prehistoric core, a worked nodule of black/brown flint, with some original cortex remaining. The nodule is irregularly shaped and shows evidence of having been worked from different angles at widely spaced intervals, as some of the worked facets have recorticated and some haven't. Some of the removals are of narrow bladelets and are probably Mesolithic in date, but it has probably been reworked in the Neolithic, or possibly the Bronze age. Maximum length 91.5mm, width 63.5mm, thickness 41.0mm; mass 234g.

Prehistoric snapped blade formed on a secondary flake of mottled black/brown flint. It is triangular in plan, and the tip and base edges both show abrupt retouch. There is cortex remaining along the central facet of the trapezoid sectioned dorsal face and ripple marks on the slightly curved ventral side. There is a notch halfway along one side which appears to be intentional. Possibly intended as a plano-convex knife, but maybe reworked to be used as a scraper.
