An incomplete cast copper alloy hinged Colchester Derivative brooch of Mackreth (2011) Type 6bc, dating to the early Romano-British period (circa AD 60/65-100). The brooch is in two joining fragments which show a fairly recent break between the two parts. The head of the brooch has the left side of the cylindrical wing extant and the right is missing. An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester Derivative brooch dating to the early Roman period (circa 43-100 AD). The wings of the brooch are plain and open-ended, the cylindrical casing retains fragments of the probable iron axis bar within. An off-centre rectangular opening in the wing cylinder allows for a now-missing, probably hinged, pin to be attached. The bow of the brooch is humped and rounded at the head and tapers towards the foot, suggesting a Dolphin type. Very little of the catchplate remains and the brooch is in relatively poor condition all over, meaning any decoration i…

An incomplete cast copper alloy button-and-loop fastener of Roman date, probably dating from the 2nd century AD. The fastener has a transverse bar for a shank unlike the more common button types, which are earlier. This corresponds with Wild's (1970) Class IX, although it may be a hybrid form, as it appears to have had a triangular attachment loop rather than circular. The bar is circular in cross-section with an enlarged middle section, flanked by circumferential incised lines either side of a wider groove. The ends of the bar are corroded. The bar joins the shank at an angle of abov…

A complete copper alloy possible toggle or dress fastener dating from the post-Medieval period (circa 1600-1800 AD). This type of artefact was previously identified by Ralph Jackson (2010) and Sally Worrell (2008) as a Late Iron Age or early Roman cosmetic pestle, dating circa 75-300 AD. Some recorders suggest that at least some of these are in fact clothing fasteners; toggles similar to those on a duffle coat (see SOM-5CC893; FAKL-5A38B6). The date of these toggles is still unknown as none have been found in dated contexts. The object consists of a pointed oval with a circular cr…

An incomplete copper alloy Aesica type bow brooch dating to the early Romano-British period (circa AD 43-100). The brooch has an open cylindrical spring casing, with a short length of spring wound around around the copper alloy axis bar.
