An incomplete copper alloy Aesica type bow brooch dating to the early Romano-British period (circa AD 43-100). The brooch has an open cylindrical spring casing, with a short length of spring wound around around the copper alloy axis bar. This may be a crude replacement for a hinged pin, as the aperture is rather slim and squared off. The bow has an arched lozenge-shaped form with a central cast longitudinal rib flanked by two triangular 'wings'. These each contain a curved triangular inset to hold enamel, perhaps originally red in colour. Either side of the central rib is a groove con…

An incomplete copper alloy enamelled bow-and-fantail brooch dating from the early Romano-British period (circa AD 50-150). The brooch has a very flat semi-cylindrical spring casing wth the stub of either a rearhook or a headloop. The bow is formed of a disc containing a red enamel circle divided into quarters by the arms of a four-armed star motif extending from a central enamelled circle in an off-white colour. The off-white colour of the enamel may have degraded from an original yellow. This disc expands into a triangular fantail foot, containing a red enamelled triangle motif. This…

An incomplete copper alloy Romano-British umbonate enamelled hinged plate brooch, dating circa AD 100-250. The brooch has a central domed disc decorated with two concentric bands of enamel comprising a radiating pattern of triangles in contrasting colours of red and dark blue. Areas of the copper alloy surface appear to have a white metal coating. There is a small circular depression at the centre of the disc. The outer rim of the brooch is incomplete, leaving only a curved extension at the head and foot end. The hinge mechanism is complete, with a suggestion of an iron axis bar, base…

A cast copper alloy Romano-British hinged Headstud brooch, dating from the late 1st to 2nd century AD. The brooch is virtually complete, missing only the tip of the hinged pin and the return of the pin groove of the catchplate. At the head is an intact chain loop with a small notch missing and some other minor areas of damage. The wings are short and of slightly unequal length, with three stepped mouldings on the forward surface of each. The area between the chain loop and the headstud is smooth and undecorated, with some small, possibly recent, scratches on one side. The headstud is …

A fragment of a Late Iron Age or Early Romano-British (circa 100 BC-AD 200) cast copper alloy winged terret ring. The fragment forms approximately one quarter of the oval cross-section ring, which is broken at each end with old breaks. The projections consist of a pair of transverse wings (sometimes described as lips) separated by a transversely ribbed moulding. On one surface of each projection a slightly smaller wing is moulded. The other surface of each wing is flat and undecorated. A second ribbed moulding and two diagonal incisions are visible near the broken end of the ring oppo…
