An incomplete late medieval or post medieval ceramic moulded floor tile (c.1200 - 1400 AD). The fragment is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and cross-section. The fabric of the tile is hard earthenware with angular grit and quartz inclusions. The fabric colour is two tone, the outer a dark orange and the inner (core) a lighter orange. A green glaze has been applied to the upper surface and at least one edge. The tile depicts the 'Instruments of the Passion' including the flail, the pincers, a nail and the partial image of spear with the sponge. Comparable tiles have been identified in…

A fragment of an earthenware floor tile of post medieval date (c.1600 - 1900). The fragment is sub-rectangular in plan and cross section. The upper surface is flat with a group of 5 circular perforations which are irregular in form. The underneath is divided by a cross shape creating four separate sections/zones, in which the group of circular perforations would have been placed. This design is typical for floor tiles used in a malting house, as the perforations allow the heat to rise from beneath the floor into the malting house. The fabric is relatively hard with occasional grit inc…

An assemblage of seven fragments of industrial waste including two fragments of burnt limestone and five pieces of ironworking slag. Metal working waste is difficult to date and could be Bronze Age through to post medieval date, although this assemblage is most likely to be post medieval in date (c.1700 - 1900 AD). The pieces range in size and weight with the heaviest fragment weighing 71.5 grams and the lightest fragment weighing 7 grams. The variety of waste suggests the assemblage represents the different types of slag to be recovered from an iron working furnace, with heavier piec…

Five sherds of post medieval (c.1600 - 1800 AD) ceramic waste. The size and shape of two sherds suggest that they are fragments of floor tile, and the other three sherds are made of earthenware pottery, although the difference in fabric, colour and thickness suggests that they are not all of from the same vessel. Both tile fragments and two of the pottery sherds demonstrate evidence of misfiring, suggesting that ceramic production of some form may have been taking place on this site during this period.
The largest sherd measures 36.9mm length, 23.3mm width, 13mm thickness and wei…

A body sherd of earthenware pottery of post medieval date (c. 1550 - 1750 AD). The sherd is sub-rectangular in plan and cross-section. The fabric is a hard earthenware with angular grit and quartz inclusions. The colour is uniform throughout the sherd and is a light orange-buff. Alternating stripes of orange-brown and yellow slip have been applied to the internal surface of the sherd, producing a slighting ridged feel to the glaze suggesting an earlier date.
Seven other sherds of earthenware pottery of a post medieval date (c.1700 - 1800) were found at the same site. Four have been…

A small body sherd of earthenware pottery of medieval date (c.1400 -1500). The sherd is broadly triangular in plan with a rectangular cross-section. Unfortunately the small size of the sherd makes it difficult to confirm the shape and style of the original vessel. The fabric is a course earthenware with angular grit and quartz inclusions. The fabric colour is uniform throughout and is a creamy white. On the exterior a green glaze has been applied.
The sherd measures 24.2mm length, 21.2mm width, 4.5mm thickness and weighs 2.8 grams.

The fabric is a hard earthenware with frequent grit and quartz inclusions. The fabric is also mica rich. The colour is uniform throughout the sherd and is a light yellow-cream. The exterior surface is smooth and the interior surface is ribbed. There is evidence of a yellow-green glaze applied to the exterior surface of the vessel.

A complete small late medieval or post medieval ceramic moulded floor tile (c.1200 - 1400 AD). The tile is square in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. The fabric of the tile is hard earthenware with angular grit and quartz inclusions. The fabric colour is uniform throughout and is a mid-orange. The upper surface is incised with two parallel curving lines which would have most likely been part of a larger pattern when laid. There is no evidence of glaze on the upper surface, however, a patch of dark green glaze on the edge of the tile suggests that this would also have once be…

An incomplete late medieval ceramic moulded floor tile (c.1300 - 1500 AD). The fabric of the tile is relatively hard with angular and sub-angular grit and quartz inclusions. The fabric is also mica rich. A partial rod handle of a glazed earthenware jug of later medieval or post medieval date (c.1150 - 1400 AD). The fabric is a hard earthenware with frequent inclusions of both grit and quartz. The fabric is also mica rich. The fabric is light grey in colour, with oxidised light orange interior/exterior surfaces. A green coloured glaze has been applied to the handle, although very little of this survives. There are four evenly spaced holes that line the internal edge of the handle, which were both decorative and functional as they allowed air to escape from the middle of the handle duri…

Incomplete whetstone of possible Early Medieval or Medieval date (c.800 - 1400 AD). The whetstone is made from a very fine sedimentary mica rich sandstone. It is sub-rectangular in plan with tapering edges, and is broadly rectangular in section. There is a small circular perforated hole (5.2mm diameter) drilled through the narrower top edge; this would have been used to suspend the whetstone from a belt and aid safe keeping. There is a slight worn hollow approximately half way down the one edge which is likely to have been caused though use. There are also several other chips around t…

A fragment of handmade brick or similar ceramic building material. This is most likely to date to the Roman or Medieval period (50 - 410 AD or 1300 - 1500 AD). The fragment is relatively thick and irregular in plan. The fabric is a relatively hard fired earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit and quartz inclusions. It is also has large amounts of mica and organic material within it. The colour is an oxidised red on the exterior, and grey/black on the interior, which suggests differential firing. The fragment is smooth and water washed. Not enough of the fragm…
