A silver-gilt trifid spoon, incomplete. The bowl is oval, and the tip of the bowl is bent towards the centre of the bowl. The stem broken at one end is flat and rectangular in cross section. Where the stem joins the bowl it curves tightly underneath to develop a 'rats tail' which is two thirds of the bowl in length. With the use of 'scratch engraving' a foliate design has been engraved on either side of the rats tail. Along the length of the remaining spoon stem on both front and back is a thin engraved border that is boxed off before the stem meets the bowl. On the front and back of …

A Post Medieval composite silver-gilt dress hook of trefoil form in three pieces, which have become detached from one another consisting of: 1) Sub-triangular back plate cut from silver sheet with three bosses of hemispherical shape. Each boss has three evenly spaced wire circles with a central knop at the top of the hemispherical boss. At the centre of the three bosses is a circular hole. A fragment of one sheet of a cast copper-alloy buckle plate, probably dating to the Medieval period, c. 1066-1499 AD. The remains consist a fragment of the outer plate, which is decorated on its end symmetrically with two incised triangles, both of which are filled in with two haphazard zig-zag lines which intersect to create a series of lozenge shapes. The perimeter of the plate is outlined with further incised lines. There is a small circular rivet positioned centrally near the end and a second rivet is positioned centrally at the break point of the plate. The reverse is undecor…

The remains of the buckle consist of the frame, which is intact, but is missing its pin. The outer edges of the frame are serrated with the reverse surface beveled. It has a brown-green colour and has been abraded very thin in situ. Cf. Whitehead 2003, p 60, No. 356. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An unusual encrusted small discoidal object of uncertain material, use or period, probably dating to between the later Medieval to early Modern (c. 1450-1800 AD). The object may be a token which was supposed to imitate the look of a long cross farthing or miniature penny; as such, the reverse has a long cross with at least two pellets in each quadrant. There are inner circles on both sides. The legends are illegible and the central design on the obverse is uncertain, but seems to be a 'P'. Due to the severity of the surface wear of this object, a full identification is impossible.…

A cast lead Medieval seal matrix, c. 13th-14th century AD. The seal matrix is flat and circular in shape with what looks like the remains of a small suspension loop or tab on the reverse face, which is slightly dished. The obverse is incised with a legend which seems to read: S' ALICIEI . FIL'[IA] RIC', meaning that this is the seal of Alicia, daughter of Richard. The central design on the obverse is of an openwork cross, similar to those seen on other objects during this period. In addition, the reverse face has further decoration, albeit it is unclear what it was meant to represent.…

A badly mis-struck and possible contemporary copy of a Medieval Edwardian silver long cross farthing, probably issued by Edward I. Mint of London, c. AD 1300-1310. There is a large portion of the blank exposed on the obverse, where the moneyer did not hit the blank squarely on the die; this results in the loss of much of the latter half of the legend. The reverse is similarly affected, although all of the legend is legible. The obverse depicts a crowned bust with simple bifoliate crown, no jewels and no drapery, inside of an inner circle; the legend has an error at the beginning …

A large flint flake, probably part of the debitage from a larger flint nodule; of uncertain prehistoric date. The object has a large prepared platform with a significant bulb of percussion and irregular ripples which run the length of the flake. The dorsal face of the flake has a central ridge running from platform to distal end. No signs of contemporary retouch are visible, however it appears that an individual at a more recent date has worked one mesial edge as the inner flint material has become exposed. A possible unfinished roughout of a flint implement of uncertain prehistoric date. The object is sub-triangular in plan with a sub-triangular to sub-oval cross-section, moving from proximal to distal ends. Although it seems that this object was shaped into a triangle and there are some visible remains of knapping to support this, its surface has been rolled and abraded to such a degree that identification is difficult. In addition, the presence of crystalline impurities in the flint material suggests that perhaps this object was initially shaped and then discarded before finishing. Ce…

Six sherds from Roman fine to medium sand-tempered ware vessels, c. 2nd-4th century AD. Of the six sherds, five are body sherds and one is a small rolled rim sherd. They are of varying colouration, ranging from orange-red to buff-pink to buff to charcoal grey, with the rim sherd being buff-brown colour; all exhibit similar small to medium inclusions. Because they have been rolled and abraded from the shoreline, a more specific date or identification is difficult. The overall weight of the sherds is 26.6 grams. The rim sherd has a suggested internal diameter of 19 cm and measures …

Five sherds of Medieval sand-tempered ware from vessels of uncertain type, c. mid 13th-14th century AD. Four are body sherds and the fifth is a small rim sherd. All of the sherds are of consistent colour and fabric, with reddish-orange colour on outer surface and a buff-brown inner surface and small to medium-sized inclusions. The rim sherd is too small to measure to suggest a circumference for the original vessel. It is uncertain whether any of the sherds are from the same vessel. Four body sherds from Roman wheelmade greyware ceramic vessels, c. 2nd-4th century AD. It is unclear whether any of the sherds belong to the same vessel and there is nothing particularly specific remaining on the sherds to facilitate a more specific date or attribution to a type of vessel. The ceramic is all of a fine material, with very small inclusions evenly dispersed. There seems to be a degree of sooting which has been identified on the external surface of three of the four sherds by specialist Luke Barber. The collective weight is 27.8 grams. The largest fragment measures 51.…
