Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Part of the outer cast copper-alloy casing of a Medieval globular steelyard weight with unusual arms and part of the detached lead core which was found with it. About 20% of the casing survives. The remaining section suggest the body was spherical with a flattened area at the top . The top loop, which would have run across the middle of this flat top is lost to an old break. The top and sides lack the incised decoration which is common on these pieces. On the remaining section of side there is a near complete integrally cast raised shield. It is a triangular shield with a straight top…

A copper alloy mount of Medieval date. It is formed of two curved upright arms, D-shaped in cross-section and which are linked at their closest point by an integrally cast oval cross bar with flat back and front and curved sides. The uprights are both incomplete with on complete and one broken end. The complete ends are near the oval cross bar and end in slightly flattened circular terminals. The incomplete ends are both concave, as though they have broken across air holes or joints. The longer upright starts to curve more strongly away from the cross bar to almost be at 90 degrees to…

Medieval copper alloy French jetton dating to AD 1380 to 1450. Crown / triple stranded cross flueretty type with obverse legend ENVIE AMOVR REO. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Post-medieval coin weight for the French ecu, square uniface weight with a design of a crowned shield with flat top and pointed bottom containing three fluer de lis, flanked by fluer de lis, one to each side, all within a plain line circular border. The weight has bevelled sides so the back is larger than the front. The weight is 13.2 by 13.7mm and 2.2mm thick and weighs 2.64g, 40.7 grains.
The weight appears to be for a French ecu, it is very underweight for this (the coin weighs 3.50grams) but too heavy for the half ecu. The ecu was issued form 1423-1474 but continued to be curre…
