Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete cast copper alloy openwork zoomorphic belt buckle of Late Roman date. The buckle's loop and openwork plate are cast as one, making this a Hawkes and Dunning type IIB. The buckle is symmetrical along the longitudinal axis and the loop's outside edge is moulded to resemble a pair of stylised facing dolphins. The dolphins curve around to form the rest of the loop and one tail protrudes from the inside edge, adjacent to where the missing pin would have sat, although the other has been broken off. Part of the adjacent openwork plate has also been preserved. Working away from t…

The base of a cast copper alloy leg from a medieval or early post-medieval cauldron or skillet. The leg, which would have been one of three on a single vessel, has a flat D-shaped base. The front side is angled at about 60 degrees and has three vertical ridges on the flat (exterior) side. Parts of the surface are quite pitted. The foot appears to have been miscast and would never have been used.

Object type: PIN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Published
The spherical head of an openwork cast copper alloy pin, probably of 16th century date. Some traces of gilding can be seen. The pin head appears to have been cast to imitate the filigree work which is seen on other pins of this date, which are often made from precious metals. The sphere is divided into two hemispheres by one band of 'filigree'. Each hemisphere is formed from three circles of 'filigree' and each of these in turn is made of three smaller circles. In the centre of the smaller circles and in between the larger circles there are tiny sub-rounded decorative bosses. There are…

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Published
An elaborate horse harness pendant suspension mount, cast in copper alloy in several pieces and gilded. The pendant suspension mount is somewhat distorted but formerly consisted of an 'M' shaped mount, approximately 40mm wide by 45mm high, from which hung three separately cast pendants. The two outer pendants, both shield-shaped and around 28mm (including the suspension loops, which are turned through 90 degrees) by 17mm, survive in situ. The central pendant is missing, but a parallel (see below) suggests that this was a small bell rather than another shield. The mount would have been…
