Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A two disc cast lead cloth seal of probable post-medieval date. The cloth seal has a diameter of 20.4mm, it is 3mm thick and weighs 4.94g. The tag which held the two halves together prior to use is missing but the seal is otherwise complete. The external face of the second (rivetted) disc is moulded with a detailed depiction of a castle or tower. On the external face of the first disc there is an unclear device, possibly an initial. Geoff Egan comments: "This cloth seal is not familiar but may be Continental, perhaps from France or the Low Countries, and probably dates from the sixteen…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Published
A small plain double-looped oval buckle, cast in copper alloy. The buckle measures 23.3mm in length, 19.1mm in width, it is 3.7mm thick and weighs 3.17g. It is not quite symmetrical. The front of the buckle is convex and the back is flat. The central bar is slightly narrowed and the pin is missing. This simple style of buckle was used right through the Middle Ages and into the post-medieval period, so it is not possible to give it a more precise date (Cuddeford 1996, p. 20).

Workflow stage: Published
A small cast copper alloy casket key of probable medieval date. The key measures 38.4mm in length and weighs 4.09g. The bow is circular, the hollow stem has a circular cross section and the bit has a rectangular cleft on each side. A number of similar keys are illustrated in Brian Read's 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' (2001, pp. 67, 72, nos. 544-547). These examples have all been dated to the late twelfth to early fourteenth centuries.

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

A sheet copper alloy rove from a late medieval or post-medieval knife handle. The rove is tear drop-shaped and measures 23.4mm by 14.3mm by 0.8mm. It weighs 1.32g. It would have formed part of a whittle-tang knife handle constructed from a series of roves (some of which might have been made from other metals and/or materials) extending along part of much of its length. Part of a handle of such construction with a similar sub-oval cross-section can be seen in Egan's 'Material Culture in London in an Age of Transition' (2005, pp. 94-5, no. 415).

A cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable seventeenth century date. The fitting measures 27.8mm by 15.3mm by 2.9mm and weighs 3.59g. The front is convex and the back slightly concave. On the reverse are the stubs of two pointed integral lugs. The fitting is quite worn but would probably have originally been curvilinear with three lobes at each end and a longitudinal line of symmetry, similar in shape for example to no. 285 in Read's 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' (2000, pp. 28, 34, fig. 19).

Similar spur rowels on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database include DENO-300FE7, from Old Bolsover, Derbyshire and IOW-D8E057, from Brighstone, Isle of Wight.

A cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable seventeenth century date. The fitting measures 25.2mm by 10.2mm by 1.9mm and weighs 3.67g. It is a long oval with slight projections in the centre of both long sides. There is a centrally placed sub-circular perforation. At each end of the reverse there is a curving integral lug, one of which is broken part way along its length. Similar fittings can be seen in Read's 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' (2000, pp. 28, 36, fig. 21, nos. 307, 310, 314).

A cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable sixteenth century date. The fitting measures 26.3mm by 14.5mm by 2.3mm and weighs 2.18g. It is sub-triangular with curvilinear sides and a faint, apparently foliate, design incised on the front. In the centre of the wider end there is a rivet hole which contains the remains of a corroded iron rivet. A similar fitting from south-west Wiltshire can be seen in Read's 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' (2000, pp. 30, 41, fig. 24, no. 349). Read suggests the Wiltshire example formed part of a matching suite of items.

A cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable late fifteenth to sixteenth century date. The fitting measures 28.8mm by 12.9mm by 3.2mm and weighs 4.76g. It consists of a triangular plate with a shallow pointed identation in the centre of the short side and a backwards curving hook at the opposite end. This hook holds a cast copper alloy ring with a diameter of 11.6mm. The main part of the fitting is perforated by two equally spaced central rivet holes, both containing iron corrosion. The front of the fitting is slightly convex and the back slightly concave. Similar fittings can be seen…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MODERN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A sheet copper alloy mount of Victorian date. The mount measures 18.1mm by 18mm by 2.1mm and weighs 0.77g. It is shaped as an openwork cross and crosslet and has turned over edges and a punched dot border. In the centre of the reverse there are faint traces of solder. These fittings are often misidentified but the thin pressed examples are actually Victorian mounts (pers. comm. Garry Crace). See for example IOW-5DA4A4.

A sheet copper alloy strap fitting of probable late fifteenth to early sixteenth century date. The fitting measures 14.6mm by 14.3mm by 1.1mm and weighs 0.75g. It lozenge-shaped and has turned over edges. The front is decorated with a stamped pattern comprising a central cross bottony surrounded by a double circle. There is no trace of the separate rivet which was probably soldered to the centre of the reverse. A broadly similar fitting from Exeter, Devon, can be seen in Read's 'History Beneath or Feet' (1995, p. 115, nos. 728). Read dates the Exeter example to between the start of the…
