A cast copper alloy seal matrix of early fourteenth century date. The vesica-shaped seal measures 30mm by 19mm. The die depicts a tonsured head and the legend reads + S. THOME CAPELL'I (seal of Thomas the Chaplain). It is perhaps worth noting that the first known Vicar of Wedmore was Thomas de Harptree, appointed in 1311, and that the adjoining field to the northwest was part of the Vicar's glebe land, which he might have visited regularly. While it cannot be proven, it is interesting to speculate that this might be the seal of Thomas, Vicar of Wedmore, dropped while visiting his adjac…

A well-preserved cast copper alloy seal matrix of medieval date. The vesica-shaped (oval with pointed ends) seal matrix measures 30.9mm by 19.3mm by 3.2mm and weighs 10.03g. In the centre there is a fleur-de-lis, the vertical 'branch' filled with parallel diagonal lines so that it resembles a feather or ear of corn. The legend around is between two grooves, and begins with a 6-pointed star. It reads * S' WILL' I FIL' IO.h'IS (Seal of William son of John). The letters are heavily seriffed, so that the F of FIL' looks almost like an E. The dot in the centre of IO.h'IS indicates an abbre…

A cast copper alloy seal matrix, probably dating from the fourteenth century. The seal is vesica shaped (oval with pointed ends). It is 37.19mm in length, 22.08mm in width, 2.86mm thick and weighs 10.43g. Behind one of the pointed ends there is a small perforated lug, 8.67mm by 5mm by 3.56mm. The legend around the edge of the seal reads * S' MARIE DE HERTFORDE (Seal of Mary of Hertford) and in the centre there is a depiction of a running stag and some foliage. There are traces of gilding on both sides of the seal matrix.
Another word for stag is 'hart', perhaps a rebus for Hertford.

Part of a late eighteenth century gold fob seal set with a cornelian intaglio. The struts and suspension loop are missing. The fob seal is oval in shape and measures 33.81mm by 28.08mm by 5.24mm. It weighs 11.25g. The arms engraved on the intaglio are those of John Pitt, 2nd earl of Chatham (1756-1835), impalling those of his wife, Mary Elizabeth Townshend (1762-1821), daughter of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney. It encorporates the coronet, supporters and motto, BENIGNO NUMINE ('by favour of the heavens') of the earls of Chatham. The seal must date from between the marriage of J…

A cast copper alloy pendant seal matrix of medieval date. The seal matrix has a round die which narrows into a hexagonally faceted conical handle. This terminates with a double collar and a perforated trefoil knop suspension loop. The loop appears to be be filled with iron corrosion suggesting that the seal matrix was at one point attached to an iron ring or chain. The diameter of the die is 19.56mm and the seal matrix is 25.7mm in length. It weighs 10.75g. The central motif is a four legged creature, probably a griffin. The legend starts with a saltire cross and appears to read 'RVD.P…

A cast copper alloy seal matrix of later medieval date. The oval die measures 23.58mm by 19.29mm and the overall height from die to handle is 21.45mm. It weighs 11.34g. The seal matrix has a conical handle, with six subtle facets, which tapers to a collar and the remains of the broken trefoil terminal. The die is incised with a motif consisting of two parallel pointed archways with a figure standing in each. Below the archways are two downwards pointing triangles which make the overall design more symmetrical. There is no legend. The seal matrix is quite worn and little of the original…

Part of a cast copper alloy double revolving heraldic seal matrix of probable seventeenth century date. The flat oval matrix measures 17.55mm by 15.32mm by 3.53mm and weighs 5.81g. Along the centre of the long axis there is a cylindrical hole, which would have contained the spindle around which the seal matrix could be rotated, to allow both sides to be used. On one side there is a right-facing rampant lion with crown, orb and sceptre and on the other is a shield decorated with a griffin over a crown. There are traces of gilding on both sides. A cast copper alloy scabbard chape of late medieval or post-medieval date. The chape measures 54.49mm in length by 14.68mm (maximum diameter) by 9.84mm (minimum diameter) and weighs 13g. The upper edge is damaged but may formerly have had a portion deliberately cut out on both sides. The chape's surface is quite corroded but two bands of parallel horizontal lines are visible, one just below the cut out upper edge and the other around the centre. There are hints of further cast decoration, but it is very unclear. The chape's terminal expands slightly into a rounded knop. There is furthe…

A small fragment of gold strip tapering to a tongue-shaped terminal, where it has been pierced, slightly off-centre. The piercing has been carried out from the slightly less dull side. The piece is very weathered, and there is some cracking across the width where it seems to have been folded. Surviving length 38.5mm; maximum surviving width 10.5mm; thickness less than 0.5mm; weight 1.63 grams. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface indicated a gold content of 84-87 %, silver content of 10-13 %, the remainder being copper. The fragment is part of a larger piece, whi…

A decorative panel occupies the outermost three-quarters of the bar; this is in the form of a pair of double-incised crosses, with a vertical border at each end. Black niello has been used to pick out thes…
