Three sherds (two base, one body) from wheel-thrown jugs of 13th to 15th century date. The sherds have grey reduced cores and oxidised orange surfaces. The fabric contains moderate fine quartz sand and occasional iron oxide (up to 1mm). All three sherds are glazed externally with a green/purple lead glaze. The curvature of the base sherds indicates base diameters of 12cm and 15cm. The jugs were probably produced at one of the south Somerset production centres.

Two large conjoining base sherds from a wheel-thrown jug of medieval date. The sherds have a grey reduced core and oxidised orange surfaces. The fabric contains moderate fine quartz sand, occasional iron oxide (up to 4mm) and some larger quartz pieces (up to 1mm). There are splashes of an external green lead glaze. The base of vessel displays possible rouletted decoration. Its curvature indicates a former diameter of 16cm. The jug was probably produced at one of the south/west Somerset production centres.

A rim fragment from a cast copper alloy cooking vessel of medieval or post medieval date. The top of the rim slopes at 45 degrees into an internal lip. The thickness of the rest of the vessel is around 4.8mm. The inside face of the vessel is smooth and the exterior is slightly more rough. The curvature suggests that the vessel rim was formerly around 34cm in diameter.

Part of the cast copper alloy leg of a medieval or post medieval cooking vessel such as a cauldron or skillet. The vessel leg measures 29mm in length by 49.4mm in width by 31.1mm in thickness and weighs 158.6g. It has a D-shaped cross-section with a sloping flat front and a trapezoidal back, with five facets. The front face has a central projecting vertical rib. The leg expands into the flat base. It would have been one of three on a complete vessel.

A handle sherd of probable seventeenth century date. The sherd has a quatrefoil-shaped cross-section and probably formed part of the handle of a bucket pot. The fabric contains abundant very fine (>0.1mm) quartz sand, moderate small (>2.5mm) rounded iron oxide and moderate very fine mica particles. The mica appears to be more common on the surfaces. The sherd has light orange oxidised surfaces and a reduced grey core. There are traces of a yellow lead glaze in several places. It was probably a product of one of the South Somerset production centres.

A rim sherd from large storage jar of probable 17th century date. The reduced earthenware fabric has some oxidised patches on the surface and contains moderate very small rounded quartz, occasional small sub-rounded black iron-rich particles and sparse small sub-rounded oolithic limestone. The sherd is internally and externally glazed with a brownish-green lead glaze. The curvature of the flat rim indicates a former rim diameter of c. 340mm. It is slightly recessed, possibly to take a lid. The dark colour of the fabric suggests that it may come from an East Devon/West Somerset producti…

A small body sherd from a thin walled vessel of probable late medieval to post medieval date. The earthenware fabric contains moderate very small sub-angular to rounded quartz and occasional small sub-angular brown-red iron oxide. The sherd has orange oxidised surfaces and a grey reduced core. The sherd is internally glazed with a brownish-green lead glaze. The fabric has a slightly reddish to purple colour, indicating a higher iron content in the clay than South Somerset products. It may come from an East Devon/West Somerset production site.

A small fragment of Samian ware pottery of early Roman date. The fragment measures 15.1mm by 12.7mm by 4.1mm and weighs 0.78g. The internal surface has a brownish-orange slip but the external surface is very worn and all traces of slip have been removed. The fabric is an oxidised pinkish buff, with occasional flecks of mica. The sherd is likely to be from a vessel produced at Lezoux in Central Gaul.

A fragment of a cast copper alloy vessel handle of probable late Iron Age date. The fragment consists of the incomplete attachment plate and part of the projecting handle. It measures 37.3mm in length and weighs 13.36g. The attachment plate is a curvilinear 'm' shape, 31.6mm by 17.6mm, with a circular perforation on each side. The section which projects from the central lobe of the attachment plate is partially hollow and has an oval cross-section. It narrows slightly into a larger knop with a D-shaped cross section, 13.6mm by 8.8mm. The external face of the knop is convex and the back…

A rim sherd from a Coarse Sandy ware bowl of early post-medieval date. The sandy fabric is oxidised with slightly reduced surfaces and external sooting. It contains moderate fine mica. The bowl would originally have had a flat rim with an external upwards projecting flange, a rim form which may have acted as a lid seat. The bowl's body would have then narrowed at an angle of about 45 degrees and was probably internally glazed. A similar bowl is illustrated in 'Medieval and Post-Medieval Finds from Exeter' (1984, pp. 152-3, fig. 67 no. 1A). It is likely to be a south Somerset product. T…

A leg from a cast copper alloy cooking vessel such as a cauldron or skillet of medieval or post-medieval date. The leg measures 54.4mm by 32.2mm by 22.2mm and weighs 86.43g. It has a sub-triangular cross-section with two external faces. There is a vertical ridge on the angle between these faces and less well-defined vertical ridges in the centre of both external faces. Slightly off centre on the internal face is a concave vertical linear depression. The base of the leg is rounded and at its other end there is part of the curving internal surface of the cooking vessel. The leg would hav…

The cast copper alloy handle from a skillet or posnet of probable post medieval date. The handle measures 59.3mm by 20.5mm by 18.5mm and weighs 62.14g. It is plain, featureless and undecorated with a fairly rough surface. The end which would have adjoined the cauldron's body is angled at 45 degrees. The lug handle would have been one of two on a complete vessel.

A cast copper alloy leg from a medieval or post-medieval vessel, probably a skillet, to judge from its size and form. The leg measures 35.9mm by 25.5mm by 15mm and weighs 50.69g. It has a flat back and a convex front, a rounded terminal end and widens towards the broken end to form a large curved ridge. The leg would have been one of three on the original vessel.

A cast copper leg from a ewer (water jug), of medieval date. The fragment measures 55.9mm by 18.5mm by 11.7mm and weighs 35g. It would have been one of three on a complete vessel. The inside face of the leg is flat and the outside face is faceted to form an irregular hexagonal cross-section. Immediately above the foot there is a horizontal ridge. The foot projects forward and has a rounded terminal. This ewer foot dates from the fourteenth of fifteenth century. The vessel of which it formed part would have been used to hold water for hand-washing (Lewis 1987).

A cast copper alloy object which is probably the terminal from the drop handle from a vessel of later medieval or early post-medieval date. The zoomorphic terminal measures 23.4mm by 17mm by 14.8mm and weighs 24.4g. Both ends are flat with a off-centre hole which is much narrower at the mouth end. The terminal appears to be moulded to resemble a dog, with diagonally orientated leaf-shaped ears, sunken eyes, slightly narrowed snout, upwards projecting nose and open mouth. A similar zoomorphic terminal collar is illustrated in Egan (1998, p. 175, no. 487). Egan states that a comparable h…
