The fragmentary first disc from a two disc cast lead cloth seal of probable seventeenth century date. The fragment measures 28.4mm by 23.14mm by 3.5mm and weighs 9.86g. The external face depicts a shield on which there is a upwards pointing sword with two mullets on each side and a cross pattee above. These are the arms of the city of Haarlem in Holland. Around the arms is the legend HAERL[EMS GOET], meaning goods from Haarlem. On the rivet is the number 20, which indicated the length in Dutch ells of the cloth being certified. Around the rivet is the impression of a finely woven cloth.

A two disc cast lead cloth seal of probable post-medieval date. The cloth seal has a diameter of 20.4mm, it is 3mm thick and weighs 4.94g. The tag which held the two halves together prior to use is missing but the seal is otherwise complete. The external face of the second (rivetted) disc is moulded with a detailed depiction of a castle or tower. On the external face of the first disc there is an unclear device, possibly an initial. Geoff Egan comments: "This cloth seal is not familiar but may be Continental, perhaps from France or the Low Countries, and probably dates from the sixteen…

A post medieval cast two-part lead cloth seal from Ulm in southern Germany. The first disc has a V (the city's initial) over a bull running left and the second disc has the city's arms. These are in the form of a shield, the upper half of which is divided into eight squares (four horizontal by two vertical) each containing a dot. The lower half of the shield is plain. Geoff Egan dates this cloth seal to the sixteenth or seventeenth century and suggests that it was used for a linen or half linen textile.

One half of a cast lead two-piece cloth seal of post medieval date. The outer side appears to show a haloed St Michael trampling the devil, whose arms are raised in futile defense. The orientation of the other (rivet) side is incomplete and hence not very clear, but it shows an asymmetrical bird-like device with ornate plumage or scrolling, below which is a complex ligature (apparently reading P or R, X, D, E or F, B reversed) with a palm wreath on one side. The imprint around the rivet is from a fine textile. This cloth seal is probably a late sixteenth century or early seventeenth ce…

The second disc from a two-part cast lead cloth seal of probable late sixteenth century date. The cloth seal has a diameter of 25.39mm and weighs 4.04g. There is a fringe of extra metal around the disc and on the interior surface there is the imprint from a coarse textile. On the external surface part of the legend is visible. The Lombardic lettering reads [COM] DORS[..], indicating that the seal came from Dorset. The missing central rivet was probably decorated with a crown over a squarish device, possibly a portcullis.

A two-part cast lead cloth seal of probable late sixteenth century date. The cloth seal measures 32.01mm by 21.44mm by 4.53mm and weighs 10.68g. The exterior of disc 1 has an incomplete flan and is labelled with a large letter C. It is unlikely that this was intended to represent the Roman numeral for 100, but is probably some other coding. The exterior of disc 2 shows a crown over a portcullis (grid 3x3), around which is the legend S VL[..]AG PA[N...]COM [DO....] in Lombardic lettering, indicating that the seal came from Dorset.

A two-part cast lead cloth seal of late fifteenth or early sixteenth century date. The cloth seal measures 24.67mm by 19.14mm by 5.65mm and weighs 7.28g. Part of disc 1 is missing but enough is present to see that the exterior shows a crude crown over an ornate shield with the arms of England and a rose to the right. Around this in Lombardic lettering is the legend '..COM SOM' indicating that the seal came from Somerset. A two-part cast lead cloth seal of sixteenth century date. The cloth seal measures 24.34mm by 19.99mm by 4.24mm and weighs 10.02g. The exterior of disc 1 is blank. The exterior of disc 2 shows a crown over a large, thin letter F with a fleur de lis to each side. Around this in thick Lombardic lettering, is the legend ..[AO]' VEAL. TAVNTO[N], indicating that the seal came from Taunton in Somerset. The letter F was used from 1474 to indicate a textile with minor faults that were significant enough to have the customer's attention drawn to them in this way (pers. comm. Geoff Egan).

Disc 1 from a two-part cast lead cloth seal of probable early sixteenth century date. The cloth seal measures 26.31mm by 20.62mm by 4.43mm and weighs 6.42g. It is corroded and the flan is incomplete. The exterior of the disc has a large X. It is plausible although unlikely that the X represented the Roman numeral for 10 (perhaps indicating a specification of the length of the cloth in yards or its weight in pounds). Some other coding is more probable. On the rivet there is a crown over a single, seeded rose. The only part of the legend which is legible is a letter A. The rose is diffic…
