A sheet copper alloy strap end of late medieval to early post-medieval date. The rectangular strap end measures 27.3mm by 22.6mm by 3.8mm and weighs 2.89g. It has been formed from a folded sheet, which is decorated on one side with stamped motifs (some are arguably conjoined). These are in the form of a line of cording, along the seam, and two lines of beading, which flank a blackletter 'legend'. This appears to comprise solely minims. There are two iron rivets close to the open end. This accessory appears to be analogous to the 'Blossoms-Inn' site assemblage from London and may even …

A copper alloy and silver strap end of early-medieval date. The strap end measures 51.5mm by 11mm by 3.6mm at its widest points and weighs 7g. One end is zoomorphic, moulded to represent a beast's head seen from above and etched detail to represent its ears. The other end is split in order to hold the leather strap. There is another engraved motive at this end which comprises a semi-circle with three short lines inside which form a triangle. Seven silver rivets pierce the strap end, three in pairs and one (that closest to the 'head' end) on its own. There is also a small portion of si…

A cast copper alloy strap end of late medieval date. The openwork one-piece strap end measures 65.5mm by 42.8mm by 8.1mm and weighs 18.4g. It consists of an openwork roundel with a square attachment edge on one side and an oval terminal opposite. The attachment edge contains two rivet holes and the oval terminal is turned through 90 degrees and perforated in the centre. The strap end is very worn and fairly corroded and as a result it is not possible to define the nature of the openwork design. This strap end probably dates from the late 14th or 15th century AD. The closest parallels i…

A cast copper alloy strap end of late Anglo-Saxon date. The tongue-shaped strap end measures 30.5mm by 15.2mm (a width to length ratio of 1:2) by 2.8mm and weighs 4.97g. The strap end has two equally spaced rivet holes alongside its narrowed straight end, one of which is broken. The front of the strap end is decorated with stamped annulets which are arranged in a border around the edge and along the centre of the longitudinal axis. There are also two lines incised parallel to the narrowed section. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The strap end appears to be an unusually plain exam…

A cast copper alloy strap end of late Anglo-Saxon date. The tongue-shaped strap end measures 34.3mm by 17.7mm (a width to length ratio of 1:1.94) by 1.9mm and weighs 4.06g. The strap end has three equally spaced rivet holes alongside its narrowed straight end, one of which contains some corroded metal, apparently also copper alloy. The moulded openwork design is in the form of a symmetrical plant scroll. There are traces of silvering or tinning on parts of the surface. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The strap end is an example of Thomas's Class E, type 1 ('Winchester style') and…

The front plate of a sheet copper alloy composite strap end of medieval date. The angular tongue-shaped front plate measures 25.33mm by 21.13mm by 1.05mm and weighs 1.85g. It has an irregular notched attachment edge and holes for three rivets, one at each end of the attachment edge and one opposite, at the end of the sub-triangular section. Some iron corrosion is present in the latter rivet hole. The strap end is undecorated apart from several irregular incised lines on the front. This strap end fragment probably dates from the fourteenth century.

A small cast copper alloy strap end of early medieval date. The strap end measures 30.71mm by 9.31mm (a length to width ratio of about 1:3.3) by 2.72mm and weighs 2.15g. The strap end has a split proximal end with a single central rivet, a tapering plate and a worn terminal, which may have been zoomorphic. It therefore falls into Thomas's Class A and probably dates from the ninth century. Little decoration survives, although there is a slight transverse ridge about two-thirds of the way along the object towards the terminal. This is located at the point where the strap end terminal en…

A copper alloy double sheet strap end of medieval date. The strap end is long and narrow and tapers towards the trefoil-shaped distal end. It measures 63.1mm in length, 14.34mm at the widest point, 3.11mm thick and it weighs 5.39g. There is a single central rivet at each end, one of which (distal) is integral with the front sheet. The flat undecorated back sheet is slighly smaller than the front sheet, which is decorated with incised lines forming a series of adjoining lozenge shapes. A strap end of similar size and shape can be seen in Egan and Pritchard's 'Dress Accessories c 1150 - …

A copper alloy three piece strap end with sheet spacer, probably of fourteenth century date. The strap end consists of a sheet back plate which extends the whole length of the object, including the terminal, a central sheet spacer which occupies the whole width of the object but only extends for about two thirds of its length, and a sheet front plate, which extends only to the terminal. The three components are held together by four copper alloy rivets, all still in situ. Three are located towards the proximal end (for the strap) and the other is towards the distal end, just before the…
