Three sherds (two base, one body) from wheel-thrown jugs of 13th to 15th century date. The sherds have grey reduced cores and oxidised orange surfaces. The fabric contains moderate fine quartz sand and occasional iron oxide (up to 1mm). All three sherds are glazed externally with a green/purple lead glaze. The curvature of the base sherds indicates base diameters of 12cm and 15cm. The jugs were probably produced at one of the south Somerset production centres.

Two large conjoining base sherds from a wheel-thrown jug of medieval date. The sherds have a grey reduced core and oxidised orange surfaces. The fabric contains moderate fine quartz sand, occasional iron oxide (up to 4mm) and some larger quartz pieces (up to 1mm). There are splashes of an external green lead glaze. The base of vessel displays possible rouletted decoration. Its curvature indicates a former diameter of 16cm. The jug was probably produced at one of the south/west Somerset production centres.

A handle sherd of probable seventeenth century date. The sherd has a quatrefoil-shaped cross-section and probably formed part of the handle of a bucket pot. The fabric contains abundant very fine (>0.1mm) quartz sand, moderate small (>2.5mm) rounded iron oxide and moderate very fine mica particles. The mica appears to be more common on the surfaces. The sherd has light orange oxidised surfaces and a reduced grey core. There are traces of a yellow lead glaze in several places. It was probably a product of one of the South Somerset production centres. Dimensions: 47mm by 21.5mm by 18.…

A barley twist handle fragment from a late medieval or early post medieval vessel. The broadly cylindrical fragment measures 66mm in length by 28.7mm in diameter and weighs 46.21g. It has an oxidised orange surface and a reduced grey core. The fabric contains abundant fine rounded quartz sand and occasional darker orange iron oxide. There are patches of a light brownish-green lead glaze in the recesses. This is probably a product of one of the South Somerset production centres.

A rim sherd from large storage jar of probable 17th century date. The reduced earthenware fabric has some oxidised patches on the surface and contains moderate very small rounded quartz, occasional small sub-rounded black iron-rich particles and sparse small sub-rounded oolithic limestone. The sherd is internally and externally glazed with a brownish-green lead glaze. The curvature of the flat rim indicates a former rim diameter of c. 340mm. It is slightly recessed, possibly to take a lid. The dark colour of the fabric suggests that it may come from an East Devon/West Somerset producti…

A small body sherd from a thin walled vessel of probable late medieval to post medieval date. The earthenware fabric contains moderate very small sub-angular to rounded quartz and occasional small sub-angular brown-red iron oxide. The sherd has orange oxidised surfaces and a grey reduced core. The sherd is internally glazed with a brownish-green lead glaze. The fabric has a slightly reddish to purple colour, indicating a higher iron content in the clay than South Somerset products. It may come from an East Devon/West Somerset production site.

A small fragment of Samian ware pottery of early Roman date. The fragment measures 15.1mm by 12.7mm by 4.1mm and weighs 0.78g. The internal surface has a brownish-orange slip but the external surface is very worn and all traces of slip have been removed. The fabric is an oxidised pinkish buff, with occasional flecks of mica. The sherd is likely to be from a vessel produced at Lezoux in Central Gaul.

A rim sherd from a Coarse Sandy ware bowl of early post-medieval date. The sandy fabric is oxidised with slightly reduced surfaces and external sooting. It contains moderate fine mica. The bowl would originally have had a flat rim with an external upwards projecting flange, a rim form which may have acted as a lid seat. The bowl's body would have then narrowed at an angle of about 45 degrees and was probably internally glazed. A similar bowl is illustrated in 'Medieval and Post-Medieval Finds from Exeter' (1984, pp. 152-3, fig. 67 no. 1A). It is likely to be a south Somerset product. T…

Four pottery sherds of medieval date. The sherds include one everted rim sherd, one base angle sherd and two body sherds. The fabric is fairly course and sandy with moderate sub-rounded to angular flint and quartz pieces (up to 5mm). Three of the sherds have buff to orange oxidised surfaces and reduced grey cores. The other sherd is oxidised all the way through, with the exception of the internal surface, which is reduced. The sherds probably come from cooking pots of 11th to 13th century date. Five sherds of hand-made pottery of Middle Bronze Age date. The sherds have oxidised orangey-brown exterior and interior surfaces and reduced grey/brown cores. The clay matrix contains a moderate to common (25-30%) amount of very well-sorted sub-rounded quartz grains measuring less than 0.25mm. There are also rare amounts of sub-rounded and well-sorted red and black iron oxides measuring less than 0.5mm. The fabric has been tempered with sparse (3%) sub-angular, poorly sorted calcined flint inclusions measuring between 0.5mm and 5mm. The also contain rare (1%) amounts of sub-angular we…

Two sherds of hand-made pottery of Middle Bronze Age date. One has been oxidised orangey-brown all the way through. This may have happened after it was broken as the oxidisation visible in the fractures is slightly patchy and it has a softer more soapy feel than the other sherd. The other sherd has an orangey exterior and grey/brown interior. The clay matrix contains a moderate to common (25-30%) amount of very well-sorted sub-rounded quartz grains measuring less than 0.25mm. Ten sherds of hand-made pottery of Middle Bronze Age date. Nine of the sherds are undiagnostic body sherds and the remaining one is a very abraded rim. Less that 5% of the rim has survived, making it very difficult to decipher its form and diameter, but it does appear to be slightly globular in shape. The colour of the sherds vary, but generally they have oxidised orangey brown exteriors and reduced grey/brown interiors. The clay matrix contains a moderate to common (25-30%) amount of very well-sorted sub-rounded quartz grains measuring less than 0.25mm. There are also rare amounts of …

A sherd of hand-made pottery of Middle Bronze Age date. The coarse textured sherd has a slight oxidisied buff to brown exterior and a reduced dark grey/brown interior.
