A copper alloy and silver strap end of early-medieval date. The strap end measures 51.5mm by 11mm by 3.6mm at its widest points and weighs 7g. One end is zoomorphic, moulded to represent a beast's head seen from above and etched detail to represent its ears. The other end is split in order to hold the leather strap. There is another engraved motive at this end which comprises a semi-circle with three short lines inside which form a triangle. Seven silver rivets pierce the strap end, three in pairs and one (that closest to the 'head' end) on its own. There is also a small portion of si…

The moulded openwork design consists of one thicker tendril arranged in a cross shape, around which weave thinner tendrils.
A similar and slightly more complete object from Wellingore, Lincolnshire has been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database (LIN-1A8B75). A broadly similar object identified as a furniture or harness mount from Thu…

An incomplete cast copper alloy bridle cheekpiece of eleventh century AD date. The surviving part of the cheekpiece measures 42.1mm by 20.2mm by 9.7mm and weighs 13.73g. It consists of a central boss with two arms each side which both terminate in a lozengiform terminal, each with a large oval perforation. Neither terminal is complete but originally they would both have had three knops, one on the end and one of each side. Projecting from each side of the central boss, perpendicular to the two arms, is a further, larger knop. The back of the object is flat with a slight depression on …

A cast copper alloy strap end of late Anglo-Saxon date. The tongue-shaped strap end measures 30.5mm by 15.2mm (a width to length ratio of 1:2) by 2.8mm and weighs 4.97g. The strap end has two equally spaced rivet holes alongside its narrowed straight end, one of which is broken. The front of the strap end is decorated with stamped annulets which are arranged in a border around the edge and along the centre of the longitudinal axis. There are also two lines incised parallel to the narrowed section. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The strap end appears to be an unusually plain exam…

A cast copper alloy strap end of late Anglo-Saxon date. The tongue-shaped strap end measures 34.3mm by 17.7mm (a width to length ratio of 1:1.94) by 1.9mm and weighs 4.06g. The strap end has three equally spaced rivet holes alongside its narrowed straight end, one of which contains some corroded metal, apparently also copper alloy. The moulded openwork design is in the form of a symmetrical plant scroll. There are traces of silvering or tinning on parts of the surface. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The strap end is an example of Thomas's Class E, type 1 ('Winchester style') and…

Object type: BRIDLE BIT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy horse harness bit link of probable eleventh to twelfth century AD date. The bit link measures 46.61mm by 18.46mm by 8.8mm and weighs 15.72g. It consists of two oval loops (maximum diameter 18.46mm) which are separated by a narrower arm (length 14mm). The back of the object is flat and the front is convex. The end of one of the loops is extremely worn, almost to the point of breaking through. This is because it would have been attached to the bit, adjacent to the cheekpiece, and could therefore swing (Williams 2007, p. 4 - this find is referenced therein). The other…

A cast copper alloy stirrup terminal of late early-medieval date. The terminal has a hollow back which contains remnants of the lead solder which would have joined it to the side of the stirrup. The front of the terminal is zoomorphic, a simple stylised beast with straight muzzle and large eyes, one of which is oval and one more D-shaped. The muzzle has two parallel longitudinal crests, about 1mm in width, on each side of the upper surface and a protruding semi-circular knop on each side at the distal end of the ridge. A small cast copper alloy strap end of early medieval date. The strap end measures 30.71mm by 9.31mm (a length to width ratio of about 1:3.3) by 2.72mm and weighs 2.15g. The strap end has a split proximal end with a single central rivet, a tapering plate and a worn terminal, which may have been zoomorphic. It therefore falls into Thomas's Class A and probably dates from the ninth century. Little decoration survives, although there is a slight transverse ridge about two-thirds of the way along the object towards the terminal. This is located at the point where the strap end terminal en…

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An early-medieval cast copper alloy dress hook. The very thin plate (0.85mm thick) is oval (12mm by 11.3mm). Close to the edge opposite the hook, there are two small circular attachment holes, 2.3 and 2.5mm in diameter, for sewing the tag onto cloth. The pointed hook is 8mm long with a slight bend at the end. It is slightly thicker than the plate. The hooked tag is very worn with only small patches of the original surface left. One side of the plate is decorated with a engraved ring of dots, parallel to the edge. These are now very faint.
