An incomplete Middle Bronze Age low-flanged, broad-bladed shield-pattern Early unlooped palstave axehead, with recent-ish damage to the butt end. It measures 141.45mm in length and weighs in excess of 300g (limit of FLO scales). At its thickest it measures 30.12mm (across the flanges) and it is widest at the cutting edge, 63.03mm. The blade is roughly triangular in shape but heavily splayed at the very-curved cutting edge, which is slightly more expanded to one side than to the other and gives a slight impression of lop-sidedness. Below the stop ridge, it measures 22.52mm which expa…

A Middle Bronze Age (1250-1100 BC) copper alloy Transitional Palstave axehead of Type Roundhay, Midribbed Variant (Schmidt & Burgess, 1981, The Axes of Scotland and Northern England, plate 64 and 65, cf no.884). The axehead is 151.51mm in length with a maximum width (at the cutting edge) of 41.29mm. Its thickest point is at the stop, 30.58mm. It weighs c.370g (to the nearest 10g). The butt end is straight and slightly more worn on one corner. The stop is c.71mm from the butt end and the flanges would have been highest at this point, but they are damaged (from the plough). The stop…

Middle Bronze Age Transitional Palstave of Type Roundhay, Midribbed Variant (Schmidt & Burgess, 1981, The Axes of Scotland and Northern England, plate 64 and 65). The axehead is 153mm in length with a maximum width (at the cutting edge) of 40.3mm. Its thickest point is at the stop, 32.4mm. It weighs c.400g (to the nearest 10g). The butt end is slightly damaged but this is a result of the casting process and not caused through use or plough damage. Further casting errors can be seen just below the butt end and on the stop. The stop is c.75mm from the butt end and the flanges ar…

Fragment of Middle Bronze Age palstave axehead, consisting of the tip of the butt end. It is a narrow 17mm in width at the very end, which is also damaged. Its maximum thickness is 10.5mm. It widens over 23mm to 20.5mm wide at the ancient break. There are casting flashes worn down but not completely at the sides, sloping on both sides off centre towards the same side. Oval indentations on both sides below the butt accentuate the wings, just beginning. The patina is very dark green/ black and shiny. The fragment weighs 14.96g. The narrowness of the butt end suggest this is more a Middle…

Middle Bronze Age low-flanged, broad-bladed palstave axehead with Trident decoration. There is a small area of recent-ish damage to the butt end. The blade is roughly trinagular in shape with a splayed cutting edge. This is also slightly damaged but otherwise in good condition. A mid-rib extends for about half the length of the blade from beneath the stop. This, with the shield decoration that extends from the flanges, creates the trident decoration. On one face the shield is rather more triangular than the other. At the sides of the exahead the flanges has been smoothed down and a cur…

Fragment of Middle Bronze Age Transitional Palstave axehead, broken across the main body of the axe (ancient break) and also across one corner of the cutting edge (more recent break). It is probably of Type Roundhay, mid-ribbed variant : the cutting edge has been moderately expanded and at the ancient break the body is narrow (20mm wide). The mid-rib is 5mm wide at the break and continues over 40mm at the same width on both faces. The fragment is 61mm in length and the surviving cutting edge is 38mm wide. Its estimated original cutting edge width is 43mm. At the ancient break, the cros…

Almost complete late Middle Bronze Age/ early Late Bronze Age, bronze Late Palstave axehead with very pronounced stop ridges and a damged butt end and cutting edge. The Late Palstaves are generally smaller in size than the transitional types and have a projecting stop. They date to the Wilburton phase. This example is plain. The axehead is 125mm in length, the length from butt to stop being 56mm. The stop projects 9mm max from the butt. The stop side flanges extend 32mm from the butt end (on one side these are damaged (ancient) and mostly missing). The side flanges have quite angular c…
