An incomplete Middle Bronze Age low-flanged, broad-bladed shield-pattern Early unlooped palstave axehead, with recent-ish damage to the butt end. It measures 141.45mm in length and weighs in excess of 300g (limit of FLO scales). At its thickest it measures 30.12mm (across the flanges) and it is widest at the cutting edge, 63.03mm. The blade is roughly triangular in shape but heavily splayed at the very-curved cutting edge, which is slightly more expanded to one side than to the other and gives a slight impression of lop-sidedness. Fragment of Middle Bronze Age palstave axehead, consisting of the tip of the butt end. It is a narrow 17mm in width at the very end, which is also damaged. Its maximum thickness is 10.5mm. It widens over 23mm to 20.5mm wide at the ancient break. There are casting flashes worn down but not completely at the sides, sloping on both sides off centre towards the same side. The blade is roughly trinagular in shape with a splayed cutting edge. This is also slightly damaged but otherwise in good condition. Pair of palstaves, found after 1947 and reported to the Norfolk SMR in 1957. They are thought to have been found together. One palstave is looped, with trident decoration and sides flaring to a splayed and curved cutting edge with pronounced chamfering. The axehead is in good conndition with much of its patina remaining and tooling/ filing marks clearly visible along the casting seams. There is a slight depression on both sides of the hafting area.
