Object type: MINIATURE OBJECT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A miniature object in the form of an axe probably dating to the Late Iron Age or Early Roman period. It is of the looped and socketed type, but the 'socket' of the miniature is actually solid cast. The object comprises a triangular wedge of copper alloy with an integral loop. The butt end of the miniature axe is solid rather than hollow. Though once thought to be contemporaries of late Bronze Age axes, the majority of recorded examples have been found in association with late Iron Age and Roman material, or in fields where Roman sites are known (Robinson 1995). It measures approxima…

Post Medieval copper alloy double looped buckle. The buckle is formed of two 'D' shaped loops with triangular expansions in the centre of the curve to either side of a central integral strap bar. There are lobed knops on each end of the strap bar. The frame is broadly 'D' shaped in section with a flat back and slightly curved front. The pin, also of copper alloy survives intact, 'D' shaped in section with a flat back and rounded front. The pin is bent around the strap bar before extending towards the frame, tapering in width to a blunt point. A parallel is shown in Whitehead (2003; …

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval copper alloy harness pendant. The pendant is a lozenge shaped plate with a transverse suspension loop projecting from the top with a drilled circular hole. The pendant is possibly only decorated on one side as the reverse appears plain. However, other than an incised border which echoes the edge of the plate, it is difficult to discern what the decoration on the front once was with any certainty. It is possible that the design included a saltire cross with foliate decoration in the angles, perhaps linking the ends of the cross together. It measures approximately 39.5mm long, …

Medieval copper alloy buckle with plate and sheet roller. The frame is rectangular in plan with a sheet roller on the forward edge. The strap bar is recessed. The plate is sheet copper alloy, broadly rectangular in plan and has been bent in half to fit around the strap bar. There are two rivets one towards the forward edge and one at the rear of the plate, both are encrusted with iron corrosion. The pin is missing. It is a MEOLS (2007: 84) type D buckle with plate and a similar buckle is shown (ibid: 99), no. 723 which are attributed to the late 14th century.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval copper alloy buckle with integral plate. The frame is oval in plan with a protruding lip in the centre of the outer edge. The plate is rectangular in plan and extends from the inner edge of the frame. There doesn't appear to be a hole for the pin, which is now missing, to attach it to the frame. This is probably due to iron corrosion blocking up the hole suggesting that the pin was originally made of iron. Griffiths, Philpot and Egan (2007: 84) illustrate a similar example of this type of buckle minus integral plate, no. 3, and also no. 607 (ibid: 95) with integral plate an…

Medieval copper alloy single looped buckle. The frame is 'D'-shaped with a straight strap bar and curving outer edge. There is a pointed expanded lip in the centre of the curve with a lateral groove to act as a pin rest. The pin is made from circular sectioned copper alloy wire bent in a loop around the strap bar. The pin would have then extended to meet the rest in the outer curve but is now broken close to the loop. It is a MEOLS (2007:84) type 3 buckle, dated to the late 14th century.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy bit link, a specific strap distributor, or harness link, of late early-medieval date (c. AD 1000 to AD 1100). One end of the arm is complete, whilst the other end incomplete and probably broken in antiquity. The complete end of the arm is formed of an oval loop. An arm of D-shaped cross-section connects the two terminals. The broken end would have been broadly circular. The front is moulded while the reverse is flat. Adjacent to the sub-circular loop there is a sub-oval boss on the front, which is characteristic of the object type. Bit links were loc…

An almost complete, cast lead cap from a post-medieval powder measure holder (c. 1600-1700). It has straight sides with a circular top, now squashed to an oval and one open end. Where the sides meet the top there are two attachment loops, one complete and one having suffered an old break which is now very worn. There is a vertical casting scar on one face between the two loops. The powder holder cap is the most common find from Civil War sites, forming the cap to the powder holder or flask. The caps were suspended from a bandolier by cord through the attachment loops, and the flask…
