Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete, but very fine, cast copper-alloy zoomorphic Roman plate brooch in the form of a bird in flight (duck). As such, it belongs to a group of enamelled Roman bird brooches discussed by Hattatt (1987, 224ff.), and suggested to be a native British type given the paucity of Continental examples. These brooches have flat bodies and spread wings with enamelling, a triangular tail enamelled in two cells, the plain neck and head rising high from the plane of the brooch (max. H. here: 12.8mm), a wide rib along the back and a chain loop at the tail. This example is as fine, if not fi…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A small but thick double-looped cast copper-alloy buckle of post-medieval date. The loops of the buckle both have angled edges. Both surfaces are flat. The pin is now missing and in this sense the object is incomplete. However, traces of orange corrosion product around the pin bar's centre and on one of the internal faces of the outer edge suggest at the pin's iron composition. For buckles of similar form see Whitehead (1996, 55).

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A slightly corroded and bent plain copper-alloy sheet rivet which would have been used to hold repairs to a vessel in place. The object is hexagonal in form with a central slot in which a rivet survives. This latter is sub-rectangular in form, having originally been hexagonal. It was folded in on itself from the sides before being folded back. The ensemble has corroded to a mid-dark green colour. Similar examples found in Norwich tend to be found in post-medieval contexts (Margeson 1993, 92-93; refs. 574, 575).

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded and slightly damaged medieval composite strap-end. The strap-end broadly shield shaped with angled ends. It is formed of a pair of sheets, now slightly mis-aligned, either side of a solid spacer which occupies the whole width of the strap-end. The strap-end was held together by a pair of rivets at the attachment end, one in each corner, and one above the small terminal knop. The object has a dark-green patina with large survivals of a white metal coating. It can be dated to the later 14th century by comparison with examples illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 147; fig. 96).

Object type: RIVET
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A rolled sheet copper-alloy rivet of a type in use from c. 1400 to c. 1700 AD. The rivet is roughly the shape of a cone with a slightly widened sub-circular base which formed its 'head'. The rivet was made from a kite-shaped piece of copper-alloy sheet, the corners being folded and rolled in to give the current shape. The point would be pushed through the items to be riveted and the rivet hammered from both sides until the point had spread out like the 'head'; the complete point suggests this rivet has not been used. Such rivets were also used as pot mends for small holes. This example…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy pin now independent of its frame, probably from a medieval annular buckle. It is solidly cast, with a cross-section in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners. The oval loop is broken such that around two-thirds of it survives. There is a rectangular ridge at the junction of the loop and the shaft. This is decorated with four transverse incisions, creating five ridges. The pin tapers slightly to a slightly notched and truncated tip. The object has now corroded to a dull grey colour with areas of lighter corrosion product. The size of this object points to this…
