Object type: BUTTON AND LOOP FASTENER
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Button-and-loop fastener made from copper alloy, with enamelled decoration. The head measures 27 x 20 mm, and is made up of four circles, each originally measuring c. 10-11 mm in diameter. The central two are close together and the outer two are set one to either side of the central pair, in the angles between them. The centres of the circles are sunken, and one of the outer and one of the inner circles retain some fragments of brownish red enamel. The outer enamelled circle is incomplete, and the break is old and worn. The shank is oval in cross-section; it emerges from the rever…

Object type: TWEEZERS
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Pair of copper-alloy tweezers made from fairly thick (1 mm) strip, with an expanded loop. The ends of the arms are both missing (fresh breaks). The loop is corrugated, with three longitudinal ridges and two grooves. The arms flare very slightly, from 3 mm wide near the loop to 4 mm wide at the breaks. They are each decorated with a fine engraved unbroken line down each edge; between these lines are irregular short longitudinal lines which do not form rows. The decoration suggests a medieval date (e.g. Egan and Pritchard 1991, 576, which is late 14th century).

Object type: SPOON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Part of the handle of a copper-alloy spoon, ending in a large 'strawberry' knop. The stem is a flattened hexagon in shape, 5 mm wide and 3 mm thick, and the break is fairly worn. The knop is large and resembles a raspberry more than a strawberry. It is also flattened so that its cross-section is a pointed oval rather than a circle; the maximum dimensions are 15 x 11 mm. The knop is separated from the stem by a double collar. Surviving total length, 64 mm. Spoons with 'strawberry' knops are fairly rare and appear to be mainly of 16th and 17th century date.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Circular brooch or buckle frame with the loop from the pin surviving. The ring is a slightly irregular 26 mm in diameter, with a flattened area on the exterior which may be the result of the casting process. It is sub-square or sub-circular in cross-section, measuring roughly 2.5 mm wide and 2.5 mm thick. There is no pin constriction or decoration, and so following Egan and Pritchard this is classed as a buckle rather than a brooch. The loop is a piece of flat copper-alloy strip 4 mm wide, wrapped around the frame and with the shaft broken off. There is a slightly thinner part of t…

The frame measures 16 mm wide by 12 mm long, and the addition of the pin brings the length up to 14 mm.

Unusual cast copper-alloy and corroded iron mount/terminal, probably from a knife with an iron tang. It is unusual because of its decoration, which consists of a female double faced head. The base is a thick circular disc 13 mm in diameter. It has a groove around its circumference, and on the underside is iron corrosion from a central iron shank. This disc replaces the neck; above it is are the heads. The rear quarter or so of the heads are fused, and the hairstyles and faces (although worn and corroded ) look identical. The hair has a centre parting and seems to be loosely gathe…
