Copper-alloy lock hasp made in two pieces. The first is the plate - a piece of strip, now 40 mm long, which is broken at a perforation at one end. It flares very slightly from 6 mm at the worn break to a maximum of 8 mm, then tapers again more strongly to 3 mm wide. This end is then tightly curled under to form a hinge loop. The edges of this strip are not completely regular and there is an area of hammering along one edge. At its widest point the strip has two longitudinally set perforations, which contain the ends of a second piece of strip which forms the hasp loop. This strip…

Square mount, each side 19 mm long. It has a narrow ridge across the centre, dividing it into two halves each of which is a long low semi-cylinder. At each end the semi-cylinders are closed by a vertical edge. In the centre of the reverse is an integral tapering rivet, which instead of the large integral rove commonly found on this type of mount merely has a burred-over end. The total thickness from the front to the back of the rivet is 10 mm. Probably a military fitting.

Object type: PIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper-alloy pin with biconical head, missing part of shaft. The head is decorated on the upper cone; five broad radiating grooves are visible, and there may have been other motifs (e.g. dots alternating with the grooves) but corrosion makes this uncertain. The widest point of the head is flanked by two circumferential grooves, and the lower cone is undecorated. This tapers smoothly into the shaft, with no collar. The shaft then tapers gently to a very corroded point. As the length is only 35 mm it seems likely that the shaft is incomplete.

Copper-alloy handle from an iron knife. It has a thick oval terminal, attached along one of its long sides and with two small projections at the junction with the rest of the handle. The rest is a long rectangle, with a slot visible along the top and bottom with corroded iron from the tang; this is decorated identically on either face with two zones of decoration. The first, nearer the terminal, has a rectangular cut-out on either face providing a deep space for a possible inlay. The second, at the other end, consists of three broad transverse grooves which help to taper the handle…

Unidentified object made from copper alloy. At one end is a flat plate with one end probably broken; its elements are a short 4 mm wide length with bevelled edges, then an 8 mm wide section decorated with two transverse grooves, then a 5 mm wide area with bevelled edges, then lastly a rounded 9 mm wide area with bevelled edges. This takes up nearly two-thirds of the 28.5 mm length of the object, and has the only fixing device, a small iron rivet to one side at the start of the final rounded lobe . The other third is a thicker, nearly three-dimensional area which could be a very styl…

Chunky mount, probably from a vessel, made from silvered and gilded copper alloy. It consists of a sub-rectangular plate and a hook that might have fitted over the vessel's rim; both curve down their long axis to fit around a globular vessel wall, and both combine to form a stylised animal. The plate is 20 mm wide at most, and 23 mm long. It has rounded corners and a slightly concave curve to the long sides. It is decorated with slightly angular symmetrical triple-strand interlace around four circular perforations; the two furthest away from the animal's head may have been function…

'Propeller-shaped' mount, now bent and with a little missing. The central circular lobe is 17 mm in diameter, and has a central dot surrounded by two engraved rings. The curved edges are decorated with edge nicks. There are two flaring terminal lobes, each pierced for a rivet; one is complete and undecorated, and has bevelled edges, but the other has lost most of its edges. The central lobe and the incomplete terminal lobe are a little bent. This type of mount was used to stiffen a large belt which was probably a marker of status in the Roman army. It measures 31 mm long in its b…

Plano-convex object, perhaps a decorated spindle whorl. It is 22 mm in diameter and 11 mm tall, with a distinctly flat top. The central perforation flares very slightly from 6 mm wide at the top to 7 mm wide at the bottom, and is perhaps more sub-triangular than circular. Both the flat base and the convex upper surface are decorated with ring-and-dot motifs. Around the bottom of the convex face are blind-drilled holes the same size as the rings, and these alternate with nicks cut into the edge. Where there is room between the ring-and-dots these nicks extend into grooves which run …

Unidentified 19th-century object made from copper alloy with turquoise bead decoration. This object has been recorded as undecorated ones are frequently found and their date has been hitherto a mystery; unfortunately, this decorated example still does not help us work out their function. The object is made of two hollow halves joined together into a circle with an off-centre perforation. The effect is that of a long tapering tube with the edges bent round and joined into a circle 18 mm in diameter. The soldered seam between the two halves is clearly visible. One half - the reverse …

Copper-alloy suspension device, probably for a hanging lamp. There is a tall central stem which ends in a large circular loop (11 mm across externally, 6 mm diameter internally). The stem is roughly circular in section, and at its base is a triangle whose corners are all extended into arms. One is broken, but the other two end in expanded pierced lugs. On the underside of the triangle, continuing the line of the stem, is a D-shaped lug, probably originally pierced but now blocked with corrosion. There are lots of filemarks on all surfaces. Similar objects are known from Norfolk an…

Lead seal matrix. Circular, 28 mm in diameter, and plano-convex, rising to 8 mm thick. In the centre of the reverse is a long projecting peg which is now bent over (and not included in the measurement of thickness). The die has engraved inner and outer borders and a deep circular dot. Between the borders are engraved straight lines which must have been imitating letters. Not a single letter is confidently recognisable, although there does seem to be a cross at one point (presumably beginning the inscription) and after this there may be the letters WILL. The matrix is then damaged…

Roman Republican silver denarius of Mark Antony, 32-31 BC. Mint moving with Mark Antony. Exceptionally fresh condition, suggesting that it was an import of the pre-conquest or very early post-conquest period. It certainly does not show the level of wear that most legionary denarii found in Britain do. These coins stay in circulation until the third century and normally show a degree of wear that reflects this.

Workflow stage: Published Find published
Chunky D-shaped buckle frame with an animal head at each end of the loop and at the pin rest, and an inset bar. The bar has a lump of iron corrosion at one end, probably from the pin. The animal heads are three-dimensional but rather simplified; although each has a pair of deeply drilled eyes, the rest of the decoration just consists of grooves running down the snout. The larger head, at the pin rest, has a V-shaped nick between the eyes which would have acted as a groove for the pin; this head has some iron corrosion. The rest of the loop is a pointed oval in cross-section, angled…

Inside this is another quatrefoil, and then a central relief circle. Only one of the foils survives complete, and this has a large pellet between the central circle and the line of the inner quatrefoil. Copper-alloy mount, probably from a sword harness. It has a pointed-oval plate, with a longitudinal groove running between the points. There are shallow oblique grooves to either side (a little like the veins of a leaf) and a border groove. The central groove is interrupted by two rivet holes. At one end there are projections to either side and then a long extension, now bent, which was probably originally a hook. The surviving unbent length is c. 45 mm, the width of the plate 14 mm. Object type: BOOK FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Domed circular mount, probably from a book. It is 17 mm in diameter and not completely regular; there is a central squarish perforation with rounded corners. Although it is very corroded (a pale green matt surface is mostly broken away to reveal a rough brown interior), decoration survives on the convex face consisting of six grooves radiating from the perforation. A little gilding survives in the grooves. This type of domed mount was often used on books to protect the covers from rubbing on a flat surface. It falls into Howsam's type B.2.2. These appear to date from the 14th to 16…

Fragment of flat circular frame with a short decorated projection. The frame is 36 mm in diameter, 4 mm wide and 1.5 mm thick, with edges a little more rounded on one face than the other. Nearly half of it survives, and the breaks are old and worn. The projection is 6 mm wide at the most, and 13.5 mm long (9.5 mm long if the 4 mm width of the frame is discounted). It tapers and is decorated on one face with a clear chevron moulding and perhaps two dots; it may have been intended to represent an animal head. The other face is flat and has filemarks.
