Strap fitting made from a piece of copper-alloy strip folded in half and secured at the attachment end with two copper-alloy rivets, both of which survive only as corrosion. The rivet holes on the reverse are broken. It measures 40 mm long by a maximum of 13.5 mm wide at the attachment edge on the upper plate, and tapers to 11 mm wide at the attachment edge on the under plate. Many of the edges are fragmentary, including the attachment edge and the folded edge, but there are some details of the broken edges which may give clues to the original shape. The upper plate has two rounded…

Hooked plate which would originally have been fixed to a scabbard strap and used to attach it to the sword belt. The plate is basically triangular, with a narrow indented base; it is convex in cross-section and there are two rivet holes (with iron corrosion) set longitudinally. Near to the apex is a transverse groove, and then the apex is extended and curved under to form an incomplete hook.

Copper-alloy strap-slide, to hold the free end of a strap down. It has been ingeniously shaped with a wide shallow round-ended lower part, and a narrower deeper trapezoidal upper part. The strap is held firmly in the lower part and the upper part is deep enough to allow mounts on the free end of the strap to pass through it. The upper edge is decoratively shaped, with a possible stylised animal head at each end and a long oval lobe in between. It is rather corroded, but where the surface survives this is a shiny black. Circular mount, now incomplete, with enamelled decoration. The mount was originally about 17 mm in diameter; it is now rather irregular, although this may be due to wear. There is a sunken dot in the centre with a sunken ring around. The sunken dot contains dark shiny enamel (possibly dark red) and the ring contains a brighter red dull enamel with two surviving inlaid white dots. On the reverse is a large integral rivet with circular rove. Just under half of the mount is missing.

Strap-slide consisting of a flat plate with a rectangular loop on the reverse. The plate is highly polished and has a nice grey-green patina. It may have been circular or oval originally, but only a very small fraction of the edge can confidently be said to be original. The current dimensions are 17.5 x 14.5 mm. The loop, although made from a chunky piece of circular-section copper-alloy rod, is rather small, measuring just 9 x 3 mm internally. There is an odd blob projecting from the outer edge of the centre of the loop which might be a casting flash. A somewhat similar object is…

Square mount, each side 19 mm long. It has a narrow ridge across the centre, dividing it into two halves each of which is a long low semi-cylinder. At each end the semi-cylinders are closed by a vertical edge. In the centre of the reverse is an integral tapering rivet, which instead of the large integral rove commonly found on this type of mount merely has a burred-over end. The total thickness from the front to the back of the rivet is 10 mm. Probably a military fitting.

'Propeller-shaped' mount, now bent and with a little missing. The central circular lobe is 17 mm in diameter, and has a central dot surrounded by two engraved rings. The curved edges are decorated with edge nicks. There are two flaring terminal lobes, each pierced for a rivet; one is complete and undecorated, and has bevelled edges, but the other has lost most of its edges. The central lobe and the incomplete terminal lobe are a little bent. This type of mount was used to stiffen a large belt which was probably a marker of status in the Roman army. It measures 31 mm long in its b…

Small copper-alloy mount, basically triangular with a small square lobe in the centre of the base and a low swelling at the apex. The sides are slightly concave giving an effect rather like a space rocket or a Christmas tree. On the reverse are the stubs from two bent-over attachment spikes. The mount has corroded to a matt pale green.

Copper-alloy mount, probably from a sword harness. It has a pointed-oval plate, with a longitudinal groove running between the points. There are shallow oblique grooves to either side (a little like the veins of a leaf) and a border groove. The central groove is interrupted by two rivet holes. At one end there are projections to either side and then a long extension, now bent, which was probably originally a hook. The surviving unbent length is c. 45 mm, the width of the plate 14 mm. The break is old and worn.

Rectangular strap-end made from a front and back plate of copper alloy with a separate strip along each side edge. There is a single separate copper-alloy rivet at the attachment end; the other end is open, and has lost not only its separate end strip but also part of the top and bottom plates. The surviving length is 39 mm and the width is 11 mm. The side strips are 2.5 mm wide, and have some shiny white-metal coating, probably the remains of solder. The front plate has grooved and counter-relief decoration at the attachment end, consisting of a grooved border around what looks lik…

Unusual type of mount. It is basically made from a rectangular piece of copper-alloy sheet folded in half and secured with four rivets. One rivet is in the centre, two are at the corners of the open end, and the fourth is halfway between the centre and the folded edge. The central rivet is 6 mm long and projects a fair way on one face, but the fourth rivet is 2.5 mm long and is flush with both faces. The edges are fragmentary, but the surviving dimensions of the folded plate are 26 mm long and 23 mm wide (i.e. parallel to the fold). A short slot has been cut in the folded edge, and …

Copper-alloy strap-end made from two sheets of copper alloy. It is a long rectangle in shape, with all edges now a little damaged; the surviving width is 9 mm and the length47 mm. The top sheet is decorated with a saltire of rocker-arm engraving, and both sheets are cut into a decorative terminal consisting of a transverse lobe and a rounded end. There is a single separate copper-alloy rivet at the attachment end, which retains a scrap of pale textile between the two sheets. Another at the terminal has now come adrift from the upper sheet. This strap-end is of composite type, alth…

Small mount in the form of a crowned head. Convex and made of copper alloy, it is not particularly well modelled; there is a straight mouth below a broad nose, with a triangular eye to either side. The crown above has three points, each divided into three. There is a large separate square-section copper-alloy rivet through the base of the crown.

Small strap-slide, for holding down the free end of a strap. The loop is trapezoidal, with one side flaring more than the other up to the top which is 10.5 mm long. The top is also a little wider than the other sides, and has bevelled edges. The bottom is 9 mm long and has an integral external rivet in the centre. Parallels from London are from late 13th to 15th century contexts.

Copper-alloy composite strap-end. A large solid knop takes up about a third of the strap-end's length, and has a triple collar below a large globular end. The central moulding of the collar is wider than the other two. The rest of the strap-end consists of the two forked arms, which form a U shape. An outer U-shaped plate is soldered to each face, with a single copper-alloy rivet joining these at the attachment end. A nice chunky strap-end.

'Amphora-shaped' strap-end, now incomplete. The main body of the strap-end is a flat oval plate, rounded at one end and pointed at the other. The pointed end has a little knob terminal; at the rounded end the strap-end begins to widen and is perforated, but then broken (unworn breaks). These perforations were probably decorative, and crescent-shaped; there would have been smaller attachment holes above. One face of the strap-end is decorated with neatly bevelled edges and a rather untidy longitudinal line of five ring-and-dot motifs, with another ring-and-dot to either side forming …

Mount in the form of a fleur-de-lis. It is flat and quite large, with the two side leaves attached at their tips back to the stem to form two circular perforations. The stem is wide and has two horizontal grooves. Below, the base has a small central vertical projection with curled-out projections to either side. On the reverse are two bent-over attachment spikes, one now incomplete.
