Object type: WINDOW GLASS
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Squarish fragment of window glass, just under 2 mm thick. The surface is lost and the glass is iridescent on both faces. Although the glass is not post-medieval, it is hard to put a precise date on it; it is probably either Roman or medieval.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Button made from pale yellow glass, plano-convex in shape, 16 mm in diameter and 9 mm thick. The spiral marks on the back and, less obviously, on the front show that it was made by winding molten glass into a blob. In the centre of the back are two stubs of copper-alloy wire - the remains of a loop around which the glass was wound. Glass buttons are known from medieval contexts, but tend to be a good deal smaller than this one (see, for example, the Winchester finds - Biddle 1990). The buttons from 18th- and 19th-century contexts in America do not include glass buttons of this form…

Bright blue bead made of wound semi-translucent glass, 7 mm in diameter and 6 mm long (measured along the perforation). The perforation is 3 mm in diameter. The bead is slightly irregular with its widest point being closer to one end than the other. The surface has a lustrous appearance which may be iridescence (caused by the decay of the glass) or which may have been deliberately made. The lustre continues over a small chip near one end of the perforation. Dating a small monochrome bead is very difficult; it could be Roman or Anglo-Saxon, or could be relatively modern.

Glass bead, 22 mm long (parallel to perforation) and 12 mm in diameter, with a perforation tapering from 5 mm in diameter at one end to 2.5 mm in diameter at the other. This polychrome bead is made from red-brown, greenish yellow and dark green opaque glass, with tiny flecks of bright acid yellow. The core of the bead is red-brown, and two red-brown bands divide it transversely into three; the overlapping ends of these bands can clearly be seen. In the three zones is a marbled abstract pattern predominantly of greenish yellow, with thin stripes of dark green and dots and stripes of…

Pale blue semi-translucent glass bead, made by winding the molten glass around a core. The bead is 7.5 mm long (parallel to the perforation) and 10.5 mm in diameter; the sides are unevenly curved to make a barrel shape. The perforation is 4 mm in diameter. Small monochrome glass beads are difficult to date; this one is unlikely to be medieval but may be Roman or Anglo-Saxon, and perhaps is most likely to be 7th or early 8th century AD.

Fragment of rim from a shallow dish made from tubes of dark green glass with a yellow coating, set into a background of similar dark green glass. The green glass is translucent and the yellow glass more opaque. The rim is slightly turned out and the grinding lines show that the dish was cast, not blown. This is a rare kind of glass and probably an import from Italy.

Heads from two glass pins, both identical; slightly flattened spheres 9 mm diameter. Each has a small stub of shaft making them 9 mm long. Each one weighs 1.86g. The glass is translucent and pale green with a tiny hint of blue. Three complete glass pins with globular heads and twisted shafts were found in a fourth-century grave at Colchester (Crummy 1983, nos. 461-3, fig. 25).

Just under half of a large bead made from translucent deep blue glass with a rather carelessly inlaid trail of twisted cable. The cable appears to have been made from white, dark blue and a slightly lighter blue, and is 3 mm wide. The surviving inlay makes one complete and half of a second swag, with the cable being stretched out and crumpled at the bottom of the complete swag. Original diameter c. 25 mm, diameter of perforation c. 4 mm. Twist-decorated beads are known from the late Iron Age/early Roman period and the early Anglo-Saxon period (7th century). There are good parallel…

Cylindrical glass bead with rounded ends, made of semi-translucent pale aquamarine or turquoise glass. It is 14 mm long and 11 mm in diameter, with a 4 mm perforation. Dating this bead has proved difficult. Cylindrical shapes are not found among pre-Roman beads. No parallel can be found in M. Guido's Prehistoric and Romano-British Glass Beads (1978). Catherine Johns of the British Museum thinks it is not Roman. This leaves early Anglo-Saxon as the most likely option, but it is an unusual colour. Leslie Webster of the British Museum has seen it and has suggested that the unusual …
