Enamelled composite gold finger ring dating to the Post-Medieval period 16th Century AD. The frame/ base is made using a strip of gold sheet, rectangular in cross section, of which both edges have been turned at a right angle to create a small ridge which is slightly curved over the central element when complete. The gold strip is joined/ soldered on the underside so forming the ring and flat smooth side becomes the inside surface of the ring. The outside surface now resembles a 'trough' within which the other components are assembled. The decorative component of the ring has been …

A complete cast lead-alloy trade weight dating from the medieval period, that is c. 14th-15th century. The weight is shield shaped and has a ledge around the outside. The metal is a mid brownish-grey colour and is worn. the reverse is plain but the obverse is decorated with a crowned fleur-de-lys. Lead weighs such as this were used to weigh goods under the averdepois system from 1390 in England and were used throughout the 15th century. It is likely that these weights represent a desire to standardize the trade weight system. However with various qualities of workmanship and numerou…

Cast lead alloy weight, possibly a spindle whorl, dating from the medieval period, that is c. 1200-1500. The spindle whorl was made from cast lead alloy and is of biconical shape with a central perforation in which the spindle sat. The spindle whorl is decorated with an untidy zig-zag and dot decoration. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated lead-alloy weights are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists. They are usually biconical or cylind…

Probably a late medieval forgery of a silver penny of Henry V (AD1413-1422) or Henry VI (AD1422-61; 1470-71) dating from the 15th century. York ecclesiastical mint. Legend is incoherent and blundered. The marks next to the crown indicate a copy of Henry V issue but the annulet and trefoil stops in the legend are of Henry VI and it is possible the forger could have taken the marks of existing coins still in circulation and just copied them all onto this coin. Possibly some copper corrosion on the reverse as well. I A similar imitation of an Edwardian penny has been recorded under…

Cast lead-alloy head, probably from a toy or figurine dting from the early post-medieval period, that is c. AD1500-1700. Geoff Egan discusses more elaborate cast lead alloy female figures in Toys, Trifles and Trinkets (2005, 152ff) which are up to 10cm tall and dressed in Tudor clothing, with a veil and bonnet. Their faces, bodices and dresses and much more elaborately cast but it is possible that the head recorded here was part of a 'poor man's version' of these more elaborate figurines. It is possible that this is the terminal/handle of a hornbook: see LANCUM-5727FE

Cast copper-alloy rolled-up lead sheet probably dating from the medieval, post-medieval or modern period, that is c. AD1200-1900. The sheet is tightly rolled and there are no marking or decorations visible on the outside. The finder stated that he had tried to unroll it and even though he succeeded, he also said that there was no writing, stamps or any kind of decoration inside. It is possible that it was a weight for a net or rope used by a farmer and lost - with the piece of twine or netting now worn away.
